Clearly going by the tough questions posed in that ESPN questioner then Mr.Met is a sure fire Hall of Famer.

He has my vote.

]First baseman Tony Clark was the first Met ever to don 00, Mr. Met's number, doing so in the 2003 season. He switched to #52 that June when Queens schoolchildren asked him what had happened to Mr. Met.

That's funny.

We have this annoying annoying DJ on that classick rock plus station I'm trying to like but amn't. His name is The Weasel and he talks in the goofy-voiced way that a guy with that name would be expected to talk. He knows his rock history, but he spices his rap with readings of off-beat press releases on subjects he knows nothing about, but tries to come across as if this kooky ephemera is his hobby. Tuesday morning I'm lathering up in the shower (you may picture me naked now) and I'm ignoring him as best as I can when I hear "Blah, blah, bliddy, blah-blah, Mister Met, blah, blah."

I nearly broke my neck sprinting across my three-foot shower to turn up the volume. Was Mr. Met traded? Injured in a wreck? Dead?! DAMN YOU, WEASEL, HOW COME WHEN I'M IGNORING YOU, IT'S SO HARD TO TURN MY EARS BACK ON?!

Turns out he was reporting on Mr. Met's lead in that poll.

I remember Cal Ripken remarking at his last All-Star game that one of his biggest thrills that weekend was seeing his kids reaction when they got to meet Mr.Met

How could he not be in the mascot Hall of Fame? Does anyone know of a mascot older than Mr. Met? Does anyone know if he was the first of this kind of mascot?

From that site:

Mr. Met was first introduced on the cover of game programs in 1963, when the Mets were still playing at the Polo Grounds in northern Manhattan. When the Mets moved to Shea Stadium in 1964, the fans were introduced to a live costumed version. Mr. Met is believed to have been the first mascot in Major League Baseball to exist in human (as opposed to artistically rendered) form. He was also the first person on the Mets that was represented by a bobblehead doll.

I once saw Mr. Met's disembodied head. The original fellow, Dan Reilly, showed up at the press luncheon that was promoting the 25th anniversary video. In his day (1964-1967) he was a regular body, a paper mache head. I think he took it off to make a phone call or get into a cab.

It was a little spooky.
