The Nats don't have stadium issues. They have a new stadium next year, with the impression that new stadium revenues will lead to spending. The Marlins are being in run on an austerity budget while being shopped around for a sale and a probable move.

Nats fans have a big-league team to look forward to, while Fish fans probably don't. Plus they have a talented young Metly manager who has won three in a row and is winning the battle for fourth place. FOURTH PLACE, LADS!

Sure, but... you know, that's not our race.

We've had a fugly loss by the B-teamers, followed by a day off. Still, some elimination numbers dwindled in the interim.

It can be like fighting drunks sometimes. You stand back, enjoy the flailing, and let them knock themselves out.

In the midst, I've got to again praise Manny Acta's troops for holding their ground and going down with dignity.

In the consolation division, Arizona's charge into the Western lead has left San Diego alone atop the Wild Card race.

Milwaukee tying Chicago may drop the Cubs into the second race, where Atlanta has passed the Cards also.

Be nice to the Marlins today. It may be the last day you see them in the East

There's been very little movement in the last two days in the wild card world, with all the real contenders splitting the last two games, save for Atlanta, who is making what is likely to be thier last charge.

In doing so, the Braves have slowed the DC Juggernaut in the botom half.

Congrats to the Nats, whose continued late season resurgence not only allowed them to last longer in the East than the Marlins, but to be the team that finished the fish off.

Tonight, on the other hand, may be the Nats last stand.

In the wildcard deal, lacklustre play from San Diego has allowed the Phils a little hope with their three-game lead --- Philadelphia passing the Dodgers for second place. Milwaukee and Chicago refuse to extricate themselves from each other, and St. Louis' four-game losing streak sets them only three games off the division pace.

Washington has caught San Francisco as the best team in the back of the pack. Congratulations are also due to Pittsburgh who has celebrated it's leadership change with a long overdue passing of Houston.

Losing the last two versus Colorado has been murder --- mur-diddly-urder --- for the Phils, knocking three games off their elimination number and dispiriting the whole scene. I'm partly surprised the fans didn't burn the stadium down after the Rocks 12-0 win last night.

Between that trouncing and John Smoltz's comments last night after the Mets-Braves game, we can kind of look at last night as the night the rest of the division cashed in their chips.

Washington, of course, is out of chips.

Special thanks to Philadelphian pitchers, though, for giving Colorado a chance to make a run at San Diego in the card race. The Friars have had every chance to put this thing in their pocket and they refuse, and I don't want to see some team winning this by standing still. Three-way tie for second, yo.

Chicago and Milwaukee, still tied, as they are every other day, which is pretty much how often I update this.

St. Louis. Crashing. Burning. Only hope they have is that they have more games in hand than anybody else.

Check out Cincinnati trying to catch them even after the thrashing the Mets gave them last week. It's so cute!

Too many threads are tracking the jockeying, but I might as well finish this off.

The Phils picked up a half game last night. Whoop-de-damn-doo.

But it does launch them ahead of Colorado into a tie with LA, only a game and a half off the wild card behind the Frustrating Friars.

The Cubs have shaken free of Milwaukee, for a day at least, dropping the Brews solo into the pack of wild card chasers. But it was merely an off-day for the Beermakers, so Chicago shouldn't get too happy yet.

The continued collapse of St. Louis --- accellerated by the Reds, of all people --- is amazing

For a long time there were contenders in that race and just teams hanging around, and big gulf between, but now St. Louis is closer to the back pack than the front one.

Still only four freaking games out of first.

Hey, San Diego finally showed some heart, eking out a 5-4 win ove rSan Fran, and holding Los Angeles and Philadelphia back at 1.5 behind day longer.

Meanwhhile, Atlanta passes Milwaukee. Hey, Brewers, get back into first in the NL Central. This isn't the race you want to be in.

St. Louis' backslide is now at eight games. Eight. Cincinnati, a diivision joke after getting swept by the Mets a few weeks back, is now only two games behind the defending champs.

Also climbing from the cellar is Pittsburgh, loving their new leaderless state and catching San Francisco.

Florida hangs on for another day, but Houston is eliminated from the Wild Card --- as noted elsewhere --- before being eminated from the NL Central. And that's just sad.

Florida and Washington still have "elimination numbers", but they have both been eliminated. The elimination number takes into account only the W-L records and games remaining, but not the games remaining between teams. There is no possible scenario of outcomes left where Florida or Washington will win the WC because all of those NL West teams play each other so many times.
