Scott Schoeneweis has pitched exactly once since he gave up two in LA on July 21st (coughing up another two to Pittsburgh), despite him having a good month up until then, despite the Mets being pinched in the pen, desptie Feliciano scuffling, despite having some lefty matchup problems against the Brewers, depsite an extra-inning struggle the other night. Is he hurting? Has Willie given up on the guy? "He just sucks" is probalby not a complete answer.

Either he's buried in the bull pen or they are resting him ,which would make no sense because they could just DL him,bottom line is that this team will need outs from him the rest of the way and sitting him is not constructive to getting him right.

When did "scuffling" become a euphemism for "struggling"? It seems to have happened in the last two years or so.

I don't know what the deal is on Schoeneweis. When he was pitching poorly, it seemed like he was appearing too often. Once he started pitching well, now it seems like he's not pitching enough.

Whatever the reason, if he's not pitching he shouldn't be using up a roster spot. The games this month are crucial, and the Mets need to have 25 contributors available to them. (If you look at his stats on a month-by-month breakdown, he hasn't had a good month since April.)

Sele, by the way, has only pitched twice since July 8.

Marty Noble wrote in his 07/30 mailbag on Mets.com that "Schoeneweis' responsibilities now include some longer relief," and "With Aaron Heilman reasserting himself as an effective pitcher against left-handed batters lately, Schoeneweis' assignments in short relief may be fewer."

Either way, I don't miss him. His roster spot is based on his contract and the fact that he has to give his consent to be demoted.

he was a terrible signing, no doubt about that. i like Sosa as the longman if we're going to just fill-in with Pelfrey/Lawrence/whoever until Pedro gets back, I'd probably demote Sele if theres a short reliever who we can get that will actually help.

No, and I think it's pretty obvious the Mets are big believers in his talent. What might be news is that he's done pretty well most nights lately, and that includes the first-pitch double the other night.

mota has just NOT been consistent. if you're going to say that the 1st pitch double is something that we should all be thankful for... I don't know what to tell you. a pitch thigh high, middle part of the plate. asking hall to hit it? that's what we want?
He started making better pitches after that, and i recognize the importance of getting that first strike to set the tone, but... cmon... you can't say that first pitch was a good pitch at all.

Mota is a problem, and it's also a problem that the mets believe more in his talent than they should.

i don't think you're ever "good" on a first-pitch extra-base hit.

Mota has a 5 ERA, a decent whip (for a reliever) of 1.22. anyone have his inherited runner stats?

Take away the 6-run debacle in Colorado and his ERA is 3.47.

Even with that debacle, his peripherals are pretty good (34 hits in 34.1 IP, 28 K, 8 BB). My gripe with Schoeneweis was that Willie kept running him out to get battered by righties when historically he's not been that good at getting them out. His splits this year against lefties were awesome and still are (12 hits in 17.2, .194 BAA). Righties kill him, though. It seems Willie wanted him to be more than a LOOGY but maybe that's all he is.

so, he should've brought in Shoeneweis to face fielder, and not pedro?

There's certainly an argument for that, although, considering the guy has been in the cooler, I probably wouldn't have.
