No Respect for Gehrig?

Sports Illustrated ranks the top athletes for each number.

Bobby Orr gets the nod for number 4. That's controversial in itself, but then they list the also-rans

"Worthy of consideration: Jean Beliveau, Brett Favre, Mel Ott, Duke Snider, Adam Vinatieri."

Gehrig isn't even on the list?

It's a pretty US-centric list. Pele takes 10, but they show him in a Cosmos uniform. Warren Moon wins 1 because of the novelty of being a two-league star (but a clarly lesser one in the US, I think). Saduharu Oh doesn't win for either number he wore. I didn't see any auto racers at first glance.

Didn't mean to play the part of Steve.

Richard Petty wears 43.

All people who make uni numbers into lists suck.

I take it back. They list Lou as a runner-up.

I take the other thing back also. I did mean to play the part of Steve.

Without looking at the rest of the list, I'm guessing a few of these are no-brainers.

3 - Babe Ruth
16 - Joe Montana
23 - Michael Jordan
32 - Magic Johnson
34 - Walter Payton
42 - Jackie Robinson
99 - Wayne Gretzky

That Petty photo is great:

Was there a tipping point when the sponsor decals on the sides of stock cars went from things that make our cars run better to things that make us fat?

I haven't looked at the whole list either, but #32 to Magic is not a no-brainer...Other wearers of 32 include OJ Simpson, Jim Brown, Sandy Koufax, Franco Harris, too I think.

Steve Carlton and Shaquille O'Neal as well.

Numbers that Centerfield doesn't think are no-brainers include 41. He's obviously a huge Dirk Nowitzki fan.

If it was really US-centric, they'd give 99 to Turk Wendell.

32 should go to Jim Brown - he excelled in two sports

Oh, and Tom Brady is the best 12? I don't think so.

I think NHL counts as within the US worldview.

Did Brown wear 32 in lacrosse?

Looks like he wore the same 44 on the hardwood that he wore on the football field, so I'm going to guess he wore it in lacrosse 'til I learns different.

The page I found that photo on says that he quit the basketball team his senior year because he was kept from starting by an unwritten rule at the time that coaches wouldn't start more than two black players, and that Syracuse --- who lost in the round of eight --- lost out on a national championship bid because of that. Do our Syracusians have the same understanding?
