Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Beltran threw an absolutely perfect bullet to nail that scrappy little bastard at home.Plus the centerfield cam made me feel like I was the one throwing the ball. Great work all around.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Yeah great throw and I thought the same thing about the camera work....
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 I think the camera work was irrelevant to the Schaefer considerations. As was the throw, for that matter. One of those rare instances where I agreed with Morgan/Miller, that unless the throw got Eckstein it wasn't a good idea.Further, if you thought that was worthy of points, why wasn't Valentin's DP work (particularly in the 8th) worthy?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 I gave points to Valentin and to Beltran. And to Alou as well. All mainly for defense, although Beltran's RBI also was a factor.'
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 IMO, if Beltran deserves credit for that D, so too did LoDuca who as we all remember from last opening day, isn't a sure bet at a play at the plate.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 I missed what Miller/Morgan said (as I was only half-listening) but I assume it had something to do with the throw being to high for the cutoff man (which it was). What makes that throw even better is one-hopping it to LoDuke so it's lower and cut-off-able in the infield instead of hitting him on the fly - but there's no way Beltran should just concede the run and toss it into 2nd (and I soitenly hope that's not what M&M were saying). But, despite that imperfection, the accuracy was effin' perfect and I'm going give Beltran a few sips for it. And while the camera angle obviously shouldn't factor into things, it was just a really cool shot.

Since minuses aren't valid, I ignore any hyphens. The problem is when some rogue voter tries to award negative points. Some wiseguy saying Wagner -3 after a blown save will actually be giving Wagner 3 points if I don't catch it and void the vote.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 What Morgan said was that it was a bad play if Eckstein doesn't get tagged out,but as it was he said it was a great throw and tag .Question...When Reyes got picked off Morgan said it was a balk...fair enough but then Miller shot his argument to pieces ,IIRC Miller said that it was ok to deceive the runner once the pitcher was not on the rubber(after stepping towards third_.Who's right?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Wow!17 votes already!Great job. Let's keep it up!

Who's right?Once breaking contact w/the rubber the pitcher can do pretty much anything he likes.Balk rules are kind of funky. You CAN step to 3rd and NOT throw (unlike home or 1st) but you'd then have to break w/the rubber before turning to 1st and throwing. Looked to me like Carpenter did.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 I hate the balk rule anyway. Why is it wrong to deceive the runner? Deception is a natural part of the game. Why outlaw just a few arbitrarily selected forms of it?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Places where deception is outlawed:The balk rule. The infield fly rule....

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I'm not going to "sticky" it since it's already gotten 20 votes, but I'll be closing the voting for the April 1 game on Wednesday morning. If anyone hasn't voted and wants to, there's still time.http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=6000

Oh you think so, Sherlock? You brought it up in the "Schaefer Commentary" thread, wiseass. No need for the attitude.Valentin's play (even if less technically impressive) was more important in determining the result of the game.

Guest vtmet Guests Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I gave points for defense to: Beltran; Valentin; Reyes; Alou;Pitching points to Glavine;and offensive points to: Beltran; Delgado; Loduca (Delgado got the most offensive points because his opposite field double "broke the ice" with the Mets first 2 runs of the season)...

So when they see a smaller dude busting his ass they patronizingly use the word scrappy because they think "If only I had worked that hard". That way they can avoid acknowledging that the smaller white dude has any athletic ability whatsoever.Of course this probably can only be true if the stereotypical middle-aged white sportswriter is more than a stereotype. For myself, I think the word scrappy is fun to say. I'm gonna have to add it to the appropriate NBF thread.

dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 "Scrappy" does tend to mean "white." But not always. It can be applied to any undersized, undertalented player. Juan Pierre is often described as scrappy.
