Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 As expected. One year plus an option. Salary not yet posted.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 This suggests they're going to try Soriano in center.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I read somewheres that he was going to platoon in left with Murton.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I will miss Cliff, but I look forward to him striking out in a big spot against Aaron Heilman or Duaner Sanchez this summer.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Cliff in LF, Soriano in CF, & Jacque Jones in RF has all the makings of one really, really bad defensive OF.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I always liked Cliff. I wish him only the best as his career winds to a close in his hometown of Chicago. FK - "Cliff in LF, Soriano in CF, & Jacque Jones in RF has all the makings of one really, really bad defensive OF."Best to be a ground ball pitcher with that outfield defense behind you. The Cub's pitching staff best be working hard on their 2-seamer.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Cliff Floyd is coming home and hoping to be injury free after agreeing to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.Floyd, a Chicago native, could split time in left field with Matt Murton and also give the Cubs a left-handed bat off the bench.Floyd, who spent the previous four years with the New York Mets, can make an additional $4.5 million this year in bonuses based on plate appearances and time on the active 25-man roster. -- The New York Mets and manager Willie Randolph agreed in principle to a new $5.65 million, three-year contract that runs through 2009.The deal is scheduled to be announced today, a baseball executive familiar with the negotiations said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to confirm the deal.

Soriano has the legs for center, but good speed doesn't guarantee good defense (see Cedeno, Roger). Floyd's D depends on the health of his legs. I wouldn't expect much, granted, but they might be better than most people think.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I'd expect Angel Pagan or somebody to sub in for him in late innings.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Good for Cliffird,I expect he'll get a warm reception from the fans when the Cubs come to town.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 "Jones is a very good fielder, or at least was last time I checked"He's certainly not a klutz but doesn't really have the arm for RF.Problem with that OF is that, ideally at least, all 3 guys are LFers.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Or maybe two of them are outfielders and one a DH.
