Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I remember one of them, at least.SNY is an evil tool of the Wilpons and should not be watched or trusted except when showing game broadcasts.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 June 20, 2006: Cincinatti at New York:METS 8TH: COFFEY REPLACED MERCKER (PITCHING); Valentin tripledto center [Valentin out at home (center to catcher)]; Nadyhomered; Milledge struck out (catcher to first); CHAVEZ BATTEDFOR HEILMAN; Chavez grounded out (shortstop to first); 1 R, 2 H,0 E, 0 LOB. Reds 2, Mets 9.I thought there was a second one, but Retrosheet doesn't support that.I have this recollection of Manny Acta twice waving guys around only to get thrown out on would-be inside-the-park HRs. Maybe it was someone else?
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Just out of curiosity, who are the Red Bulls? My best guess is that they're a soccer team.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Yes.They're the NY/NJ entry in the MLS. Formerly the 'Metro Stars', they were re-named last year (in a leap of creeping commercialism) when purchased by the Austrian firm which distributes the energy drink.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 in fairness, I'd rather be called the "red bulls" or "bulls" than the "metro stars" (which i'm sure becomes "metros.")
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Says Gwreck:]Then, they did a half-hour "UltimetMoments - Long Balls" of homerun highlights. Of course, in their comprehensive review of homers, they neglected to acknolwedge Matsui's three-seasons-in-a-row of leading off his season with a homer.Amen. I noticed that Orwellian oversight and I noticed something else. The only game in the history of the New York Mets in which the New York Mets hit two grand slams in one inning took place last season and it went completely unmentioned in a show devoted to home runs hit by the New York Mets last season -- even though that show included a segment on grand slams hit by the New York Mets. The equally rare eleven-run inning, which featured those two mid-July Wrigley Field slams by Floyd and Beltran (plus a two-run shot by Wright), got not a wisp of acknowledgement. For that matter, nothing that took place a couple of weeks later on a Saturday in Atlanta, when the Mets whomped the Braves 11-3 on two Beltran homers, was spoken of.Gosh, I wonder why.Oh yeah. Those games were, respecitvely, on ESPN and Fox. SNY is apparently only interested in promoting games it produced and aired (either on its home channel or on WPIX). The same held true for its previous UltiMet special, the season-in-review. You can bet your bottom dollar (if your cable company hasn't taken it) that if the Mets scored 11 runs in one inning on an SNY game, it would have received its very own segment in any UltiMet special and probably would be reaired a few dozen times in its entirety. Is it merely self promotion? Is it rights fees? Is it shortsightedness? Would footage of a couple of swings of the bat with Howie Rose and Tom McCarthy dubbed in instead of Gary, Keith or Ron make us think "oh, SNY isn't a very important factor in my Mets viewing"?I hate stuff like that.
Guest cooby Guests Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 You know, I talking to a coworker today about the Steelers because he was wearing a Steelers shirt and I got to musing to myself that I have almost become more of a NFL fan than a baseball fan the past few years because I can actually still watch NFL on cable.THen I thought to myself, "I have MLB to thank for that". Then I realized, that no, I can thank the Mets for that. And that makes me feel pretty crummy.

I'd rather a name mean nothing than mean "That small can fits nicely up my ass, thank you!"

Guest Kong76 Guests Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 I don't know if it was mentioned elsewhere, but if you have a serious base-ball jones, SNY is showing two Caribbean World Series games today at 3:00and 7:30. Woo Hoo!
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Any Mets playing in the series?
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 NYT might be wrong, according to this:
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Hernandez wins postseason batting titleMets infield prospect hit .402 in 23 playoff games for TigresBy Eric Justic / Special to MLB.com Anderson Hernandez may not have won a championship in the Dominican Winter League, but he did take home one title. The second baseman snagged the postseason batting crown after hitting .402 with one home run, 12 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 23 games with Tigres del Licey. In 25 regular-season games, the 24-year-old infielder batted .287 with nine RBIs.Several other Mets prospects also had productive seasons in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Arizona and Hawaii. Here's a recap of their fall and winter seasons:Dominican Winter LeagueRHP Jorge Sosa -- Sosa, who signed with the Mets in mid-January, went 2-0 with a 3.72 ERA in nine postseason appearances with the Tigres del Licey. He was 1-0 with two scoreless frames in the regular season.LHP Jason Vargas -- Vargas gave up two runs on six hits over eight innings in six regular-season appearances with Leones del Escogido. OF Carlos Gomez -- Gomez went 4-for-20 with five runs scored for the Leones del Escogido, who did not make the playoffs.OF Victor Mendez -- Mendez hit .409 with five homers and 13 RBIs in 13 regular-season contests for the Gigantes del Cibao but batted just .211 and knocked in six runs in 18 postseason games. LHP Ricardo Morales -- Morales yielded two hits in 1 1/3 scoreless frames during the regular season for the Estrellas de Oriente. RHP Marcelo Perez -- Perez gave up two runs in 1 2/3 innings in two regular-season outings for the Estrellas de Oriente.Venezuelan Winter LeagueOF Endy Chavez -- Chavez wrapped up a stellar postseason with the Navegantes del Magallanes. He batted .329 with one homer, seven RBIs and 14 runs scored in 20 games, but the Magallanes were defeated in the championship eries by the Tigres de Aragua.LHP Edgar Alfonzo (oh, my son!) -- The southpaw pitched for the first time in nearly three weeks when he retired one batter on Dec. 28 to close the regular season. He went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 games and didn't pitch in the playoffs for the Navegantes del Magallanes.SS Jose Coronado -- Coronado went 4-for-17 with four runs scored and an RBI in seven regular-season games after joining the Navegantes del Magallanes on Dec. 19. He had one hit in two postseason at-bats. RHP Lino Urdaneta -- Urdaneta gave up one run in each of his final two regular-season outings. He ended up 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in 18 games. Guest Kong76 Guests Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 Today is Mets' day here, I have boxes of stuff out, cataloging and sortingforty-four years worth of treasures. While working and reading, I watchedthe 65, 67, 68, 69 team promo film and An Amazin' Era.Tuned to SNY in hopes of something good ... woman's basketball. Yuck.I know we didn't want SNY to be YESlike and be a 24/7 commercial for theMets, but jeezlouise it's mid-February, give us some freakin' old games.I'm half thinking of going out and buying that 86 dvd I've been putting off. I'min deep, send help.

While working and reading, I watchedthe 65, 67, 68, 69 team promo film and An Amazin' Era.Hey Kase, that the original An Amazin' Era with the Thirdbasemen song in and stops properly after the 1985 season or is that the one that was updated around 1988 that had info on both the 1986 and 1987 season? Been trying to get a copy to convert into a DVD, but that latter version is the one I have, and the one that is in the collection of the Westchester Library System

Guest Kong76 Guests Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 It's the original VHS, it's kinda worn out and on its' last legs. I've never seenthe one with the added years, I should find one.The third baseman song is good, but You Gotta Have Heart on The Ed SullivanShow is a lot fun. Boy, times, they have a changed ...
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2007 Author Posted February 17, 2007 I'd be interested in converting it to DVD for you, well after I make my own copy.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 ]it's mid-February, give us some freakin' old gamesI've come to the conclusion that - aside from the handful of big conf/big team games that get onto the networks and then the tourney stuff - college basketball has become the sports channel equivelent of infomercials; they're cheap as hell to buy and so the stations can just run 'em out there as time fillers. SNY actually has an old game on now.I think part of the problem is that they don't own these old game films except for the few they're buying up one or two at a time which is why they seem to just recycle the same half-dozen games when they do show them. It's just like when someone pointed out that only SNY-property games were being used for the end-of-year high-light shows; this is still a budget-conscious start-up operation.

Over at YES they actually use the WABC (or WCBS depending on the series) broadcast rather than whomever ESPN or FOX was using that night. They also do this to various regular season games that aired on national feedsActually thats a neat idea, most local viewers can't stand the national guys (especially Buck 'n McCarver) and would probably enjoy hearing a broadcast they never heard because they were watching the game rather than listening.

I mean you aren't going to get the same ratings that even a Mets-Brewers game will get on a Wednesday night in June, but it will bring more eyeballs to the sets than brokering time for info-mercials or airing niche sport games.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 The few pieces of "classic" games I've seen have used the original announcers; McCarver & Keith Jackson, for instance, on the '86 NLCS games. As far as the "guaranteed audience" for those college hoop games, the type of games I'm talking about that these sports channels pick up as time-fillers essentially draw test-pattern ratings. But they're probably close to free for the station (oft times these things are a barter arrangement concerning ad time) so it can't hurt to put them on. It's similar to the way Imus talks about the late-night and overnight shows on FAN when he says that they're only on because it's cheaper than shutting down the transmitter only to have to fire it up again the next morning.

Guest SI Metman Guests Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 After watching John Sterling call a YES-produced Ivy League Hoops game tonight featuring UPenn and Cornell, I'm wondering why SNY couldn't do the same. Maybe get a Hofstra or Columbia game in there. Gary Cohen has done many College hoops games on the radio. Also, the Mets used Jon Miller and Joe Morgan's call from the '99 Play in game. I'd love for them to eventually add the playoff games from '99 and '00 to the classics rotation.

No offense to the local schools but they're not going to attract the same audience, I think.
