This has been going on since the dawn of the DH, and tradition has been to allow teams to push their star DH onto the ballot at another position when there is no DH in the game.

the writers strike me as ignorant or worse. to give a GG to a guy who played 20 games of the position smacks of ignorance to what is actually going on in the league

Did I miss something, I thought the GGs were done my managers and coaches?

BTW, I'll give you something worse that was undereported and only because the player is one of the current "It" players in the game. How was David Ortiz even allowed to be on the ASG ballot as the AL 1Bman? Plays 10 games a year, and only because the Sox need that bat in the lineup when playing at the NL park during interleague.

the AS ballot question is a good one, is there a spot for DH? if so he belongs there, if not i dont think its fair to leave him off the ballot which means putting him at the fielding spot where he played the most games the previous year. i wonder if Steinbrenner will try to put Matsui at 2B on the ballot, he'd stand a chance of getting in

When the game is in the AL park there is a DH slot on the ballot. Not entirely sure when that officially started, probably mid-1990's. I know Edgar Martinez was usually the most vote getter a few times in that balloting. Ortiz was it in 2005

Not sure what the heck they are doing next year as the ASG moves to San Francisco so I doubt they'll be doing the DH ballot for 2007

Yup, but IIRC its only in more recent years where the regular DH played upwards of 140-162 games a year ala Edgar (due to injuries) and Ortiz (due to lack of skill). Usually they justified being considered an OFer or INFer with a decent buschel of games in the field.

Depends on what you call decent.

Edgar's lack of playing a regular position in the field may have intitially been due to injuries. But when he did play (third base) he barely drove in more than he let in. He made Butch Huskey look like Brooks Robinson. (Welllll, maybe not quite that bad)
