Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 LinkNEW YORK -- The closer the Mets get to the postseason, the more unsettling the injury to Carlos Beltran becomes. The center fielder, who hasn't played since the NL East Division-clinching game on Monday night because of a right quad strain suffered Sunday in Pittsburgh, said on Saturday that he will ask for whatever steps are necessary "to get me back."Before the Mets played the Nationals on Saturday, Beltran announced his intent to play Sunday. After watching nine more innings, he added this proviso -- "if I can."The pain -- two inches below his waist and to the left of the center of his body -- has not diminished nearly as much as Beltran had hoped, or as much as he had been told that it probably would."They told me it should hurt less everyday," Beltran said. "But it's the same."I need to play. I need to face pitchers. I need to play my game. ... We need to do something about it, make the pain go away. I can recuperate and heal after the season."Beltran said most of the treatment he's received in the last four days has been ice. He has not had a cortisone injection, and he wasn't sure one would be beneficial."But we have to do something so I can play," said Beltran, who hopes to play each game, beginning Sunday."I can't play just two games and be ready," Beltran said. "I have to be able to catch every single fly ball out there."But the injury restricts him when he runs."I can swing," Beltran said. "But I have to run."

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I'm worried because as Beltran has said he needs to be playing and not just a few games but he needs to be playing them all,we ain't winning shit without him.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I can see them winning with Pedro before I could see them winning without Beltran.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I'm looking for the bright side...The best I've got is "Pedro might go nuts and stuff."OE: My gonfalon bubble looks like shit.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Sounds like Beltran is expected to play tonight.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 IT'S A WASH. BY MICHAEL MORRISSEY September 25, 2006 -- Carlos Beltran arrived at Shea Stadium around 10 a.m. yesterday and hitting coach Rick Down walked over to his locker to get a status report on his strained left quad. To the relief of Met fans, Beltran woke up on the right side of the bed. Saying he was "feeling a lot better," Beltran tested his leg by running before yesterday's 5-1 loss to Washington. He now expects to play tonight. In a morning conversation with the Post, the MVP candidate stepped back from the idea of getting a shot for the injury. Beltran said he hasn't discussed a cortisone shot with the team, and manager Willie Randolph also downplayed that scenario. Beltran has missed the last six games. "Right now, I don't feel it like the way when it happened," he said. "But it feels weird. It feels weird for all these days without running. I just want to test it and see how it goes." After the game, he said, "Everything went fine." Although his legs felt a little bit tight and "kind of heavy," he was encouraged. "I didn't feel any pain, so that was a good thing," he said. "If I don't feel anything (when he wakes up today), I'll be out there (tonight)." With rain forecast in New York yesterday, Randolph was adamant about keeping Beltran out of the lineup "even if he came and said he wanted to play." On Saturday, Beltran expressed frustration about being sidelined and worried that he wouldn't have enough time to get ready for the playoffs. Yesterday, he said he was getting excited about the playoffs.

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I'll really feel better if he plays tonight, makes a running catch or two in the outfield and smacks the ball hard once or twice.
Guest cooby Guests Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Let's start cheering for him now
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I'm on needles and pins until I see him accellerate after a fly ball.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 It's about time he felt better! Man that was scary.
