If the Braves continue their free fall tonight, and if we really want to get it done Friday night, we will have to root for this guy to beat the Phillies Friday night:

EEEK!

Sorry, I'm not sleeping with him. You can if you want, but not me.

I'll be rooting for the Astros to win 10-9 with Clemens getting knocked out of the game in the third inning after giving up 8 earned runs on a barrage of hits.

No need for that.

The magic number is one.

I now want the Phillies to win on Friday so that the Mets can clinch at the moment of victory.

Or just for the game to last longer

Not too many depressing things (sports wise of course) than knowing you have been eliminated while still playing a game. For some reason I'm vividly recalling watching the Mets look down after it was announced at Shea that the Pirates had clinched the 1990 NL East.

Met game starts at 7:05, the Phillies game at Houston starts at 8 EST

So chances are good that the Mets will be wrapping up before the Phils do

That's good news.

I think the fans cared more about the 1990 division title than the players did. I remember being at one key game late in the season and the Mets looked like they were going through the motions. I recall thinking, "If they don't care why should I?"

Strawberry sat out a few critical games during that stretch run complaining of a bad back. When he signed with the Dodgers after the season he said, "Now you'll see the real Darryl Strawberry."

Grrr.

In retrospect, we saw the real Darryl Strawberry - a talented and kind, but unmotivated and flawed human being.
