Williams is listed as the Saturday starter.

I would have rather seen Perez. Oh well.

If Williams does indeed get the start, he'll be the first Met to have been born in Alaska.

(That will leave 6 states unrepresented. I haven't figured out which ones yet. http://leaptoad.com/mets/birthplace.php)

Yancy, your 6 missing states are Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.

Cool! Thanks!

Now the Mets need to start sending scouts to those six states.

we had our chances at the trade deadline to scratch at least one state off the list, and may still have that chance with the coming free agent season:

barry zito - nevada
jason schmidt - idaho

Mets frrom US Territories and Non-State Districts

Puerto Rico: Birthplace of 36 Mets, starting with Felix Mantilla

District of Columbia: Birthplace of one Met, Craig Anderson.

U.S. Virgin Islands Birthplace of one Met, Joe Christopher.

Guam: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

American Samoa: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. But it is the birthplace of quite a few football players. We're actually close on this one, as Benny Agbayani, despite being Hawaiian born and gaining the nickname "Hawaiian Punch," is not from Hawaiian Islander heritage, but rather notes that he is of Samoan, Filipino, Chinese, and Irish descent.

Northern Mariana Islands: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Panama Canal Zone: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. This window is closing, as the last children born there under American govenance would now be 27.

Midway Islands: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Wake Island: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Johnston Atoll: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Baker, Howland, and Jarvis Islands: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Navassa Island: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Palmyra Atoll: Birthplace of zero Mets and zero Major League players. Dispatch scouts now.

Kingman Reef: Spiritually, aren't they all from Kingman Reef?

All that talk reminds me of something I once said about Oakland Raider owner/ GM/ coach Al Davis, and that team's reputation for having tough guys.
When Mossi Tuiassusopo (sp?) got to the pros, GMs around the NFL began to realize that "the islands" might become a source of talent. So they sent their scouts to Hawaii, Samoa and the other Polynesian islands.

Al Davis thought the same thing, so he sent his scouts to the islands to look for Raider type players. He sent them to Alcatraz and Rikers.

Edgy, isn't Mariano Rivera from Panama? Did you make a distinction between Panama and the Canal Zone?

I think I really clearly made such a distinction.

Sorry. I got that. But something happened to the rest of my response. I also asked if we knew whether or not Rivera's native city is within the boundaries of the US Canal Zone.

Sorry, I'm afraid I may have inadvertantly deleted that question from your post while administrating.

Mariano Rivera is from Panama City, which had always been legally outside the zone.

Thanks,
For a while there, I was afraid this was senility starting to kick in.
