]Mets trade Nady for Perez, Hernandez BY DAVID LENNON Newsday Staff Writer July 31, 2006, 3:30 PM EDT Stunned by the season-ending injury to Duaner Sanchez only hours earlier, the Mets moved quickly today to bolster their pitching staff by trading Xavier Nady to the Pirates for Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez, a baseball official confirmed this afternoon. General manager Omar Minaya needed to find a replacement for Sanchez, who underwent surgery today in New York to repair a separated shoulder, and Hernandez apparently was the best replacement he could find. Hernandez, 41, has a 2.93 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 43 innings for the Pirates, but he's definitely a notch below the Mets' injured reliever. Sanchez, 26, was 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA and had a team-high 49 appearances. The Mets also received lefthanded starter Oliver Perez in the deal first reported by SI.com, but it's unclear how much he will help the rotation if he remains with the team. The Pirates demoted Perez after he lost 10 of his first 12 decisions this season with a 6.63 ERA, and he was 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis. Nady was having a breakout year after the offseason trade that brought him to the Mets for Mike Cameron. Nady is batting .264 with a career high 14 home runs and 40 RBI in 75 games. The Mets will likely call-up Lastings Milledge to replace him in rightfield, but Endy Chavez – a favorite of manager Willie Randolph – is certain to get his share of starts there as well.

Nady was a pleasant surpise this season. He seems to be a high price to pay (especially considering his contract) to get Roberto Hernandez back for the remainder of this season.

I feel bad for Nady, but that's the nature of the business. I would feel more secure in the post season this fall with Nady as a regular than I think I will with Milledge. Milledge should have a bright future, but I think he still needs some more time in Norfolk.

Pelfrey's starting Tuesday - he might be demoted after that, possibly in favor of a reliever, probably Bell.

The International League is investigating the incident in which the 21-year-old outfielder was ejected in the first inning by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook.

Milledge had taken exception to a called third strike. He argued with the umpire, threw down his bat and approached Estabrook. One report said Milledge bumped the umpire and that Estabrook backtracked to regain his balance as Norfolk manager Ken Oberkfell ran to intercede.

The Mets' Minor League department at Shea Stadium said it was unaware of a bumping incident, but the International League office is reviewing the situation and awaiting delivery of a videotape of it. The Mets wouldn't be obligated to recognize any discipline imposed by the International League."
