The New York Yankees acquired Abreu and starting pitcher Cory Lidle from the Phillies for four minor league prospects, according to media reports on July 30, 2006.

And this:
Beltran, Mets tie records for grand slams in month

ATLANTA (AP) -Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran tied a major league record Sunday with his third grand slam this month.

Beltran's second-inning slam was his 31st homer and New York's record-tying sixth slam this month. The drive gave the Mets a 7-0 lead and broke the club record for most homers by a center fielder in a season. Beltran came up in the third with the bases loaded again and struck out.

Beltran added his 32nd homer in the fifth inning for his fourth multihomer game of the season.

Beltran became the ninth player in major league history to hit three grand slams in a calendar month, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Devon White was the last major leaguer to accomplish the feat, doing it for Milwaukee in May 2001.

The Mets' six slams this month matches the major league record set by the Montreal Expos in April 1996 and matched by Cleveland in May 1999.

Mike Cameron's 30 homers in 2004 was the Mets' previous single-season record for a center fielder.

The more I think about this game, the more it sinks in just what a great win it was.

Sure, a laugher would have been fun. But this is ultimately much better.

If the Braves merely had their asses handed to them, they would have been able to shake it off and regroup more easily. Instead, they kept on getting closer, kept on bringing the tying run to the plate, kept on staying within reach - only to keep slipping back to the bottom of the mountain like Sisyphus. In the long run, that kind of a defeat has to be more demoralizing than simply getting beat.

What a beautiful day!

I see it as the revenge of the 2004 trade deadline sweep, pretty much the exact point you can say the 2006 Mets were born!

Whats that Klingon probverb about revenge is a dish being best served cold? Heh, it shall be a very cold October in Atlanta!

So Oliver got the win today, I didn't know until Gary pointed it out that when a pitcher fails to go 5 innings but leaves with the lead then it's up to the official scorer to say who gets the win, and well he chose Oliver.

Braves are wearing their red softball jerseys. Heck, guys, act like you care.

I don't like the blood red jerseys.

How in the world did this topic come up?

This would be a real shame.

Not really. If he can't hold a seven run lead through 5, he doesn't deserve a win. IMHO.

Well, I'd say it's shame on Glavine. Getting an early 7-0 lead should have been an easy win for him, and another notch closer to his 300. But he couldn't do it.

I wonder if he was annoyed at Willie for removing him? I think Willie did the right thing. Glavine could easily have allowed the Braves to tie the game if he had pitched the 5th inning.

You don't win all those games by blaming the manager when you know aren't cutting it.

Willie was great with the bullpen. Bringing in Wagner to slam the door was very nice.

Speaking of Wagner, he's been a lot better recently, no? Where'd that bullpen thread go?

Yes, he has been better. The two blown saves in April, plus the meltdown against the Yankees gave us a bad taste, but for the most part he's been getting it done.

It came out of a discussion regarding whether the Braves would be able to keep their attendance up even if their performance goes down. I think Gary characterized Atlanta as "more of a football and NASCAR town." Chris Cotter noted that Atlanta had become a regional team, drawing from Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, etc.

Keith then went on to say that St. Louis was like that, because, "it's the only state surrounded by five others." He then goes on to name them -- Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Nebraska, and Arkansas (getting the last one with help from Gary).

Gary seemed impressed.

Only problem? Missouri is indeed the state surrounded by the most number of other states -- tied with Tennessee -- but that number is 8, not 5. He forgot Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa. There are several other states "surrounded by 5 others" including Illinois and Massachusetts.

Keith is probably working with Civil War-era maps.

Pennsylvania borders six states:

Going clockwise from the most important one: New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio.

I was chuckling during that whole conversation and I'm not sure which was worse; Keith getting it wrong, or Ivy League Gary saying how he always learns something new from Keith.
"Hey, I'm going to teach that one to my kids"

The only thing I can think of as an excuse is that St Louie - being on the east side of the state - considers those 5 states part of their immediate "territory" (Keith mentioned it because the Cards always had the players doing off-season fan tours in those states) while Kansas & Oklahoma, being on the west side and all, are kinda far away for easy trips (although it still doesn't explain dissing Iowa).
Of course in the pre-expansion years, the Cards were MLB's westernmost & southernmost team and, as a result of that plus the powerful signal of KMOX radio, they had fans from Indiana to the Rocky Mts and the Dakotas on down to Texas.
