]One day after general manager Omar Minaya said assigning Cliff Floyd to the disabled list wasn't likely and 11 days after the Mets left fielder sprained his left ankle, the club disabled him. The move, effective retroactively to June 7, was announced shortly before the Mets' Interleague game against the Orioles on Saturday night. The corresponding move -- reinstatement of Xavier Nady from the disabled list -- won't be executed until Sunday morning, when the veteran right-handed hitter arrives at Shea. He would be available to play Sunday, when the Orioles are to start left-handed rookie Adam Loewen.

Sometimes I feel like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing in this organization.

11 days that we could have had another guy up here. now sure we won plenty of games but maybe we'd have brought up a reliever to eat some blowout innings and save the guys who matter?

i remember last year Beltran was in this same limbo for a week, then they gave him 1 AB and DL'd him thus starting his "clock" on the day of the 1 AB, whoops.

I don't think this is a case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing since the guy who said it wasn't likely and the one who eventually decided it needed to be done are both the same person.
Denying that a DL assignment is likely is virtually required GM-speak since to say otherwise tips the other team off to the fact that he's not available for that game/that series. They're either being too optimistic when these injuries first happen or the boo-boos simply aren't progressing as fast as initially expected.

I think maybe misestimations of the extents and recovery times of injuries can be added to the list of traits fans of every team think they are particularly beset by.

Omar Minaya said the chances are slim that Cliff Floyd would return on Thursday, the day the left fielder is supposed to come off the 15-day DL.

"The chances are probably not good," said Minaya, who said he still needed to wait until after Tuesday when Floyd was to have done some extensive therapy work.

Minaya mentioned that Floyd is still feeling some pain from a high ankle sprain suffered on June 6 against the Dodgers while running the bases. Floyd is able to run fine in a straight fashion, but still has difficulty moving laterally.

Minaya also said Floyd is an important part to the Mets' success down the stretch.

"He's the type of guy that can put us over the hump," said Minaya. "For example, in a game like [Monday] night, he's the type that can come up and hit a two-run home run in a big situation."
