Guest abogdan Guests Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 From the Daily News:]Pitcher too wild for Mets GM?If the Mets can play as hard as they party, they should be set for the World Series.Unfortunately, we hear General Manager Omar Minaya isn't cheering the behavior of some players who got together recently to toast third-base coach Manny Acta.Minaya is said to be especially vexed by pitcher Jorge Julio. According to a source, "Jorge was lying on a bar getting shots poured down his throat. People were taking pictures."Julio wasn't alone in the revelry, but he may get the most grief. The hurler's miserable performance has prompted fans to boo him almost every time he has taken the mound at Shea. After giving up the three final runs in a loss to the Brewers last week, he admitted, "Nothing is working right now."The bar report comes after management got the former Oriole in a trade for Kris Benson, whose mouthy sex-bomb wife, Anna, was seen as an embarrassment.Word is Minaya phoned in his displeasure to the agents of several Mets who were at Acta's party. Asked about Julio's demeanor at the bar, his agent, Diego Bentz, told us: "I wasn't there. I don't know what to say."Mets spokesman Jay Horowitz denied Minaya was upset. "We're aware there was a party honoring Manny Acta," he said. "We're not aware of the details you mentioned."

Guest old original jb Guests Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 While not the public image the Mets wish to portray, if it relaxes Mr. Julio the point where he can consistently find his release point and pitch well in games, I'm all for it. Better wild at the bar than on the mound.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Best thread title of the day.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Jay Horowitz has been with the Mets for ages, but I think he'd have a great future as a White House Press Secretary.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 If he did a shot for every shot that's been hit off him this year...
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I'm pissed that I wasn't invited!
Guest Rotblatt Guests Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Well, not to jinx him, but Julio has allowed only one baserunner in his last three appearances, and struck out 5 over 3 innings.Of course, they were all blow-outs, but hey, it's a start.

If that's what it takes to make him effective, even if it's only in a mop up role, then I say keep the shots coming.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Greg's analogy here is priceless -]Jorge Julio, perhaps imbued by a stream of shots poured down his throat while laid out flat on a bartop the way a crumpled Popeye revived from the cans of spinach Olive Oyl forcefed him (or don't you read the gossip pages?), has been suddenly, shockingly lights-out the last few times he's pitched.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 I've always found Julio's pitching more palatable when one of us was in a drunken state. Hopefully his resurgence will continue if he doesn't fall of the wagon.

He was pretty darn good yesterday.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Why not? He essentially got 8 outs in 2 innings, struck out 3 and surrendered only a single to Piazza.Edit -- Oh, I see you edited that.
