D-Dad and I were there last night. It was one of those amazin' and fun evenings that just don't happen in real life all that often (Kase - my best emotional analogy is the time we met Bobby V at his restaurant ). Among other things, I got Rusty to autograph a ball for my mom's birthday (shhh - it's a surprise), I got Alois to autograph a ball for MK, I got to pose for a photo with Tim McGraw (it didn't come out, but I still got to stand there with Tim's arm around me. Good enough!), and I got to tell the Mets' former GM that I'd never forgive him for trading away the heart of the team in 2001 (I was sitting back-to-back with the man. I couldn't resist. I did hold back, though, from telling him that his fake press conference last week was the lamest thing I've ever witnessed). It was also nice to see a Mets-oriented Tug video montage to Peter Gabriel's Solebury Hill (we've been to several Tug McGraw Foundation events in Philly, and the montages shown there are always Phillies-heavy). Tim spoke from the heart and sang a song with his band. D-Dad ran into some people he knew from previous Tug McGraw Foundation golf events. It was just a lot of fun all around.

I can vouch for Scarlet's big moment. Classic. Steve was sitting back-to-back with her all night. Only a matter of time.

Lots of fun. Rusty was really gracious, as was Al. Tim McGraw was also a great host, signing balls and cowboy hats and taking pictures with everyone.

Gotta love it.

Was there any mention of Tug's brother?

He's recently been convicted of first-degree murder, having gunned down his neighbor in front of my office mate, his wife and their two darling daughters.

Tough times for the McGraw family (Tim excluded)...

Doc - I have no idea what you're talking about. And I'd think that news like that would have made it to this forum previously (in the past we've discussed both of Tug's brothers).

Which brother do you mean? Do you have any documentation (I tried a quick Google search and came up with nada)?

Doc - the link didn't work.

But Dennis and his troubles had been discussed in Tug's autobiography that came out just after his death. It wasn't discussed at the dinner, but it's not a secret.

Sorry for the techno-SNAFU--

I think there are two real tragedies here-- the obvious murder of a young father, and the fact that someone who was obviously ill did not receive the treatment they so desperately needed.


A state appeals court on Thursday upheld the murder conviction of an uncle to country singer Tim McGraw for killing a Vallejo neighbor.

Dennis McGraw, 47, who also is the brother of onetime New York Mets baseball star Tug McGraw, was sentenced to life in prison for killing neighbor Jason Garfield, 31, on July 13, 2002.

Garfield was shot three times outside 522 El Dorado St.

Vallejo police officer Les Bottomley saw McGraw fire into Garfield's body as he lay on the street and arrested McGraw after a violent struggle, police said.

Justice Lawrence Stevens rejected a number of procedural issues raised by McGraw, saying there was "no question" that McGraw was the shooter.
