Archives update

So you may or may not notice, but each Thursday I go through the backpages of the baseball forum and cull out threads for the KTE, Game Recounts, Predictions or Permanent Link forums as well as picking out the best and brightest threads for Featured Archives according to the standards described here.

Once that's done, I send threads that haven't been responded to in 45 days to the archives at the Crane Pool Companion (I may lengthen this time period during the offseason if posting reduces). It occurs to me that once a thread is archived there's no way to bring it back and make it active again, so if this type of thing is important to you, make a habit of looking through the back pages and bump up threads you want to keep active. If there's something you think should be in the Featured Archives make a note of that.

Also, I plan in the first week of November to archive threads in the PotG, Game Recounts and KTE forums. If you think any or all of these threads need to be kept active here, bump 'em or reply in this thread of what you think should and should not be archived.

Well, you've done a great job finding and/or sparing ongoing --- but neglected --- threads like Met-Lovin' Big Shots or Wifey Watch. I appreciate you bumping and sparing some of htese.

I think ongoing and all-purpose threads should finally be retired at the end of the calendar year and restarted if desired.

we hit since moving here pretty mild. The ranks, the archives, and some of

Also, on Nov. 3rd I'll be archiving everything in the PotG, KTE, and Game Reports forums for 2005 so you have one week to let me know if you want to keep anything active in those forums (yes, Edgy, forums not fora).

I think that archiving the POTG and IGT's will have a pretty big impact, judging by the number of posts in each forum.

An archive of the Non-Baseball Forum would probably help a lot, too. There are over 6,000 posts in there, and a bunch of them are probably pretty old by now.

That was my next project after the Nov 3rd thing. Since it's been brought up what should be the procedure for archiving the NBF? Should the great threads move to the Featured Archives forum or should there be a new forum for Featured NBF threads? Any other thread I'd figure on bumping if it is All-Purpose type of thread or sending to the off-site archives if it's not good enough for the Featured Archive nor A-P.

A good batch of new inductees are in the Featured Archives forum and I bumped a couple of clever parodies to the parodies forum and some prognosticating to the Predictions archive (someone has to make it there job to read the Predictions archive and verify if any of these predictions come true). The PotG, KTE, & Game Recounts forums are now empty (except for some thread YSG asked me to keep) and ready to fill up again next season. Now the next archival project is the Non-Baseball forum. Where do we put threads that we want to keep on the board? In the Featured Archives forum, a special NBF Featured Archives forum, or just keep bumping them up in the NBF forum? Anyhow the NBF doesn't grow too fast so it's not a pressing problem, just want to get some suggestions.

You will notice there is now a NBF Classics archive with a select group of inductees from the Non-Baseball forum. There are some new threads in Featured Archives as well. I bumped up some All Purpose Style threads in the Non-Baseball Forum as well. Everything that's been inactive since before Oct. 3rd in the Baseball and Non-Baseball forums will be sent to the offsite archive as soon as I find the link to do it (if another admin could email it to me I'd appreciate it, keep losing my damn bookmarks).

New additions to our Featured Archives thread hall of fame include a couple of celebrity encounters (Valadius meets Al Leiter, we all meet Steve Zabriskie) and some silly fun started by Bret.

I've also begun a new NBF archive called the Music Archives, basically a place to store music discussions like the Band-Ladder Challenge and the "One" contest. I don't want to follow the precedent of the Film and Book forums here and have a special music only forum (for fear of making the NBF a bleak and empty place), but I do think it will be helpful to have a place to make it easy to dig up old threads.

The Crane Pool Forum asks the important questions like What Really Happened to Kevin Mitchell's Girlfriend's Cat? and How much mockery can one wrestling fan take?

Also, we're 45 days into the new year and thusno inactive threads from 2005 remain unarchived.

In preparation for the new season the rest period for inactive threads before they are archived has been shortened from 45 days to just one month, so threads will be dropping off the main page much more quickly. I also cleaned up the "Game Recounts Archive," "The KTE Archive," and sent the "CPF Parody challenge" threads to Valhalla. There are a number of "monster threads" out there that are taking up a lot of server space and while we at the CPF pride ourselves on not having many rules, I put out a plea for sanity that you consider whether or not your topic of discussion needs to be in an "All-Purpose" thread or if it has the legs to stand in a shorter thread of its own.

For archiving purposes yes, but mostly I'm saying moderation is good. The move to AP threads is creating a lot of huge threads with a number of good topics within them and sometimes its hard to see the forest for the trees.
