A combo news/IGT/analysis/results/peanut gallery thread.

Game 1, Peavy v. Carpenter, starting shortly...

Posted

This could be a very tricky series for the Cards, their pitching has not been the best lately and Carpenter has not been that great the last few weeks.

Does anyone know of an internet radio station I can listen to the game on for free?

Gary Cohen (with Luis Gonzalez) doing the call on 1050 (and perhaps your local espn radio affiliate).

Peavy went too macho in the first and gave up an 0-2 HR to Edmonds.

19 pitches; 17 strikes for Peavy thru 2; Cards up 1-0 in the 3rd.

Peavy has a rocky 3rd inning, giving up three runs, 1 one a WP and 2 on a single by Sanders. Gets out without further damage by getting Grudzielanek to ground into a DP.

Cards lead 4-0 in the top of the 4th.

I was wondering if that was Gary, because it sounded a lot like him but not exactly. Maybe it's the result of the different station. But when he started talking about Dave Magadan (I didn't know he was the Cards' hitting coach) like he knew him I was pretty sure.

Grand Salami for Regie Sanders pretty much puts this one on ice.

Peavy had been in more bad luck - dinkers, dunkers and plays not made - than bad pitching before this point. This one however is all on him as he gets an early shower.

8-0 Cards in the 5th.

Jesus, so much for my theory...IIRC Pedro Astacio is pitching game two for the Padres, not looking good for them.

This is the only one of the four series that looks lopsided to me. Get this game over with so we can have the Sox game.

I've been digging the Evil Redbird's play-by-play guy. On the grand slam, he was yelling "Get up get up get up!"

If I'd known Gary was broadcasting, I'd have gone there, but this guy's much better than the Braves, Sox or Yankee's announcers I've heard.

Morgan says that Carpenter was removed because of cramps and possible
symptoms of dehydration.

So is there anyone but LaRussa who would - up 8-1 / 2 outs in the 7th / runner on 1st / non-HR threat up to PH (Burroughs) - go to a LOOGY in that spot?

Well Tony did, Bochy responded with a righty, and the Cards got the out (K) anyway -- so I guess he can point to the fact that he got Bochy to burn an extra guy.

The NYTimes had a piece on LOOGYs this past Sunday. Not surpringly, LaGenius leads the planet in their use.

The Padres not only lost Game 1 to the Cardinals by a score of 8-5, but they lost Peavey as well.

Edited to fix link.

If the Pads win this without PV, I'd be shocked.

That link isn't working, however.

Aug. 6, 2002.

Pedro Astacio and his dangling right arm had thrown a complete-game, 10K victory over the Brewers and improved to 11-4, 2.95 ERA, 115 K in 146 IP. He was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball at that moment. I really liked him.

Over his next 9 starts he went 1-7, gave up 17 HRs and had a 10.80 ERA in 54 IP.

He could have saved Bobby Valentine's job.

Of course, Bobby (or somebody) recognizing earlier that they had gotten all they were going to get out Astacio might have saved his job also.

Ramon Hernandez is doing a VERY good job of convincing me not to go near him!!!

He's let TWO guys score at the plate when the throw has come home from first without the guys having to do anything more then a decent slide.

Second one was really brutal.

Here's hoping that Willie Randolph, Omar Minaya, and a half a dozen other Mets scouts are watching.
