smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Assuming that the Mets, should they make the playoffs, wouldn't want a 5-man pen with no lefties, and might want an extra bat or two as well, what kind of moves do you expect/want them to make before the Sept. 1st deadline? I'm thinking more in terms of call-ups than in deals, as I'm not sure if a trade is really likely at this point. For starters, I'd try to keep Mintky on the DL past 9/1 so that we don't need to make a decision on him right away. Ride Jacobs now, and worry about how good he really is later.I'd also like to see Offerman and Williams scratched in favor of Hamulack and Eric Valent.I remember that some long-term injury and a strange clause in the rules enabled the Angels to put Franciso Rodriguez in the postseason roster even though he didn't get called up until late September back in 02. Does Cameron's situation provide the Mets with that luxury?
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 We need a lefty out of the pen... therefore, Hamulack should be called up for Popsicle.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 I think Williams has gotta stay now that Cameron's out for the year plus having him in for defense for Diaz is comforting. Valent is not exactly a glove man. Plus he wasn't a hitter this year either. I think that when Mientkiewicz comes offa the d.l.that Offerman will go.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 I agree with sharpie. Sadly, Williams is playing an important role on the team now. He's also the only* guy who can start in center if Beltran needs a day off. *maybe Woodward?
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 It sure would help if Ice could play center field above Bernie Williams levels. The Mets have surprised me this year with their ability, however late after most fans demand it, to take care of this kind of business.

Does Cameron's situation provide the Mets with that luxury? What that loophole allowed you to do was to add a player to your playoff roster even if he wasn't active on Sept 1 if he was a replacement for someone disabled on your 40-man. What GMs would then do (Phillips did this all the time) was to add some injured single-A player to the 40-man and then "replace" him by adding an extra role player to the big league squad in mid Sept.I think they've cracked down on it a bit since then but I'm not sure what the full story is. Cameron is obviously a legit 40-man guy so (assuming he's not back by late Sept) he can probably be replaced by someone else. The thing about Fracisco Rodriguez is that he didn't even fit the rules the way they were back then, but MLB wrongly approved the move and didn't realize it until it was too late.

Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Popsicle is Ice. He's an old guy, therefore "Pops", plus "Ice" gave me Popsicle.I have a strange gift for doling out nicknames, I guess.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Ice is Gerald Williams. And I have a hard time remembering why.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 How about Lastings Milledge as the backup CF?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 As much as they might not want the clock to start ticking on Milledge's major-league service time, I wonder if they'll bring him up in September, let him see what he can do.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 He will be going to the Arizona Fall League.MIke Jacobs is also scheduled to go, but I think you get disqualified if you have spent any time on a major league roster.I saw the list earlier today, and don't remember where. But I think I saw Chase Lambin's name on it too.EDIT: Here's the full AFL roster:http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/2005afl/roster_gcr.html Later
