I appreciate his talent (no, really I do) and the fact that he's a great ballplayer that I would like to have on my team. Well actually I would rather have a ballplayer LIKE him, just not HIM.

I just hate the fucker. There's a slight chance that it might have something to do with the team he plays for.

ashamed of myself as an otherwise generally good human being.

I have nothing against jeter. . . he plays with heart, he is a team player (well, except for the whole not offering to move to put the better SS at SS) and, on top of that, he is good player. The only thing I don't like about jeter is the way his fans and sports writers kiss his ass. . .that bugs me to no end. . . no matter what he does, it was a great thing to do.

A-rod is the biggest MF because of that slap. . .that really sold me on his MFYiness. And, after he hits his 400th homerun, how he said he was so glad to do it in "this uniform." Give me a break you greedy bastard who has managed to bring three teams down. . . one of them, thankfully, being the yankees.

In Buster Olney's book, he does a nice job drilling down into what made many of last century's greatest MFYs tick, and is deep and on the whole, admiring.

Bernie was a shy guy who really needed the support and nuturing the team offered him early in his career and wanted badly to show he loved them back; O'Neill was a baby, but a guy whose intense focus on himself was accepted by teammates because they fed off his passion. Knoblauch was a proud guy horrified and eventually incapacitated by his own struggles and troubled personal life; Posada was driven by doubts about his own ability and fear that he would lose his job; Rivera is mature and spiritual; Wells was an unreliable alcoholic but a great talent when he wanted to be...

Now Jeter. Olney's take seems to be: From a good home, very good player, but awfully conceited, easily dissatisfied and rather uncaring toward others. Without coming out and saying it, Olney suggests Jeter is a MF.

At least that's how I read it. Anyone else who read that book get the same impression?

(PS -- It's a very good book IMO. LAST NIGHT OF THE YANKEE DYNASTY. You don't have to buy the overriding premise to enjoy it, even if/when/though it turns out to be boldly prescient).

Jeter, hands down. Jeter and I share the same first name, same spelling too. I hate it when people hear my name and say "Oh, like Derek Jeter?"

I don't know who it is , but I can tell you what they did.
I tunewd in late to hear a radio interview on WFAN yesterday. A Yankee beat reporter was being interviewed about Friday night's game.
He said that during the post game Yank manager group interview, another reporter asked Torre why he didn't have Sierra or someone else hit for Cano in the ninth inning.
Torre gave his usual "I'm not going to answer that" kind of response and the press conference went on.

After it was over, someone pulled aside the reporter who had asked that question, and told him 'You don't ask questions like that".

The MFY is the guy from the "Ministry of Truth"who gave the order to try to stifle valid questions. My guess that came from the highest of levels.

If Torre's job really is in trouble, then they would have wanted questions like that asked, so as his tactical skills are in question.
If he is secure, they want to stiffle questions like that, to show that the Boss has confidence in a "perfect" manager.

This is off-topic but I've had encounters lilke that at baseball card shows and it's a major reason why I stopped going to those shows. Even as a Yankee fan if I heard some version of "Jeter's your favorite player right?" (not even close) "You must love Jeter because he's hot!" (I don't find him attractive in the least) or "Are you buying that for your father/brother/boyfriend?" (my father hates sports, I have no siblings and my significant other at the time wasn't a sports fan) and proceed to treat me like an idiot one more time I might have lost my mind.

Back on topic, I happen to think Gary Sheffield is a pretty big MF'er but putting myself in Mets or Red Sox fans shoes I would have to choose Jeter as the biggest MF in MFY because he's generally viewed as the face of the Yankees, thus one of the most easily hated players.
