DH & Call-ups: An Appeal to Willie

For the love of God, please please please put Cairo on the DL and call up Daubach.

Why the DL?
We already have 3 or 4 guys banged up, one of whom will miss at least this series. Particularly when we're playing 9 position players (due to the DH) we can't afford to have 2 useless guys on our bench. You should probably put either Cameron or Beltran on the DL as well so they can get themselves healed, but as we don't have any hot OF in AAA to call up, I won't be too upset if this doesn't happen. That being said, it probably wouldn't hurt to sub Anderson in for Beltran as much as possible over the next week or so. If you don't want to take Beltran's bat out of the lineup, swap him in to the DH.

Why Daubach instead of Keppinger? After all, Cairo's a 2B.
Daubach is insanely hot right now, and we can work around his defense for the next week by playing him at DH. Keppinger is having a nice season--although nowhere near Daubach's--but do we really need three 2Bs on our bench? Anderson is perfectly capable of filling in for Matsui over the short term, and Daubach will provide much needed lefty power off the bench.

In addition, if Daubach keeps smacking the ball around, we'll have a viable offensive option at first base, without making a trade. Doesn't that sound nice, Willie?

Our offense sucks right now, and Daubach will be an improvement over a lame Cairo and he might turn out to be a long-term solution to our 1B problem.

This is just one of many posts I've read recently about Daubach's defense. Yet I seem to racall reading something a few months ago thatsaid his range factor and FPCT were comparable to Scrabble's.

Anyone have any stats?

I can't understand why Daubach hasn't been called up, I have more than a few times read and heard of Daubach refered to as a career minor league player, you know the type that's too good for the minors but not good enough to stick in the bigs,still he needs to be playing first or DH right now for the Mets.

Daubach's career ZR at 1B is .836. RF at 9.04. FPCT at .990. He's started 335 games (2,917 innings) there in his 7 years in the bigs. Last year he had a ZR of .808 and an RF of 9.90 in 14 games (100 innings).

Dougie's ZR is .879. RF at 9.28. FPCT at .996. He's started 663 games (5,923 innings) there in his 7 years.

So his stats aren't actually that bad. I just kind of assumed that his fielding wasn't very good based on how often he's DH'ed instead of played at first. I mean, he never really even played a full year there. The closest he came was 2001, where he started in 99 games. .846 ZR, 9.09 RF, .988 FPCT.

If anyone's seen any scouting reports regarding his defense, I'd be interested . . .

I agree, Dickshot. Nonetheless, there are genuine concerns. Teams are generally deliberate about briinging up major league veterans to fill a sort-term void, because they can't sent them down again without putting them through waivers.

Still, find a way.

By the way, is there any doubt that the blowhardocracy would delight in blaming Daubach's absence on Franco and Leiter if they were around to blame?

Daubach hit 20 home runs four years in a row. That's not All-Star worthy, but the guy can hit and he's a decent first baseman.

The other benefit is Daubach is streaky. This can hurt you in a way, but he can carry a team for a week.

blech. I'm glad I couldn't watch or listen to any of the games . . . How did Daubach look at first, though? The numbers are pretty dissapointing so far, although Dougie now seems to be getting his hits, which is nice.

Willie, I hope Daubach's slow start doesn't mean you'll stop listening to my suggestions. Speaking of which, check out the Trade Rumors thread for my new ones! To recap: drop DeJean, call up Padilla, move Wright up in the order, put Heilman in the rotation, and please ask Omar not to trade any of our prospects. We're not competing this year, and if we really want to deal, let's deal one of our pitchers.

Feel free to make these changes incrementally.

WWSB's comments in the papers today regarding DeJean -- "I gotta use him; he's a member of the team," -- perhaps indicate that if DeJean weren't a member of the team, he wouldn't have to use him.

Middle relievers come and go, and their time of usefulness to any team is likely to be short.

Funny thing about that empty statement by Randolph is that his alleged mentor Joe Torre has no problem burying a struggling reliever. Neither did Art Howe, for that matter.

Now, I'm all for continuing to find spots for a struggling guy who nonetheless persists to remain on the roster. If the GM says the player is there, it's your job to try and redeem the guy by giving him a chance to work his way back to usefulness.

Yesterday just definitiely wans't one of those spots. They ended up using a bunch of the better options anyway in trying to mop up his mess.
