Why can't they simply demote Santiago right now, as opposed to designating him for assignment? And is it me, or are DFA's happening a lot more often this year? Was there a rule change?

Yeah, I know all that. It never made sense to me. It's only what I was told.

It's a moot point, though.

]he was in the minors and majors in 2001-03, but starting in 2004 hasn't been in the minors.

Are you sure about this? He looked to be pretty much a full-time ML player by '02 and I don't see any record of him as being in the minors since '01.
So perhaps if the TBDR didn't use all those options back when they were available it could explain why he still has some "leftover".

I think this is all moot anyway since I don't see him as minor legue bound anytime soon.

He pitched in 10 games for Durham in '02, and pitched one game in '03 fur Durham (not a rehabilitation assignment).

Source is the 2005 Sporting News Baseball Register (great book).

The key is when a player has been added to the 40 man roster. IIRC, Zambrano started out his pro career as a position and was later converted to a pitcher. So, he may have spent more than three or four years in the minors, exposed to the RuleV draft, and nobody selected him before he made a 40 man roster. I didn't look at Zambrano's records, but this is a technically possible explanation.

And, about Neyer's piece. The rule was changed several years ago. I remember when teams could only option a player a total of three times - period. Not the possible yo-yo situation of today's game where a player could be sent down, then brought back up, several times a year (like Victor Diaz this year).

We don't have a confirmation yet that Trachs is the activee, but I'm going with it, God have mercy.

Which, natch confronts us again with the so-far-avoided six-starter conflict.

I still can't firgure out why Piazza got demoted? Was he injured? Tired? Or are they just testing new catchers?

I think Piazzafan maybe was wondering why he wasn't listed with the injured players (??)...don't worry, we still have him.

Thank you Scarlett and G. I didn''t see him there and I had no clue that Piazza broke a bone in his hand, thanks again.

Interesting that someone who identifies himself as "PiazzaFan411" goes two weeks without knowing about the broken hand.

The combination of "Piazza" and "411" tells me that you should have all of the information about Mike Piazza.

It looks like Mike Jacobs' cap is way too big for his head.

Scarlett - "It looks like Mike Jacobs' cap is way too big for his head."

He accidentally grabbed Castro's for his picture.

Well, that should bump Williams up off his own row.

Humber should also be here.

(Since I couldn't find the 40 man roster thread.)

From Rotoworld:

Claimed 1B/OF Todd Self off waivers from Houston Astros.

To make room for him, the Mets moved Jeff Keppinger to the 60 day DL.

Already noted elsewhere.

One thread is enough, I think. I'm letting the 40-man go.

Posted

What is the status of Keppinger? Is it likely that he'll be healthy in February?

This probably isn't right. Humber's probably on the 60-day or something. But I know he should be there somewhere, which is more than mets.com seems to know.

The Mets are no longer selfless.

I bring myself to watch: What's his uni #?

The site doesn't know.

Write Annie and see if she recalls what he wore with Houston.

ESPN, for what it's worth, has Self wearing 37.

It's not worth much, as that number is unavailable. I hope they didn't screw up and give him a retired number.

A minor injury to Matsui (which explains why he pulled up on a DP attempt the other day), and the Mets call up new Met number 24, or 23 depending on whether or not you count Todd Self.

Somebody text message Dickshot. The Mets homepage, which still doesn't have a number for Self, has Hernandez listed as number one, which he inherits from, most recently, Esix Snead, ending for now any speculation that the number was shelved while Mookie Wilson was still in uniform within the organization.
