The ship has already sailed, but it would be really cool if an owner could point to the rafters and tell a star player, "Someday, somebody may offer you a five-year deal, while we are offering four years and a vesting option, and your agent will tell you to take the guaranteed money, but it's only lifers who get their number up there, and I hope you want to be one."

It would also be good if owners didn't trade lifers, but that ship too has sailed.
