metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 And just like that, mlbrtaderumors.com suggests the Twins will keep Joe Ryan AND Bryan Buxton....I for one, would've welcomed them both. All those fans waiting for their teams to acquire one of the Minnesota Twins’ stars probably can forget it.The Twins do not anticipate moving center fielder Byron Buxton or right-handers Joe Ryan and Pablo López, according to league sources briefed on their plans. Minnesota’s goal is to keep those players, build around them and compete in 2026.Rosenthal in The Athletic https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6866003/2025/12/05/minnesota-twins-offseason-plans-byron-buxton-joe-ryan/
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2025 Posted December 6, 2025 That's ok.Let's get Freddy Peralta and Imai.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2025 Posted December 7, 2025 We lost one Ryan many years ago, so this is our opportunity to get another good Ryan to replace the old one. Joe might be too good a pitcher for David Stearns, as he is still ascending, is mid-prime and has only improved these past few years, but should Stearns slip up and actually sign him, I could see him putting up 2024 Sean Manaea-type numbers.

You do understand that, if this acquisition were to happen, it would be via a trade rather than a straight signing seeing as how Ryan is still two years away from FA-gency, right?iow this is not something Stearns can simply choose to do unilaterally. It would require both the cooperation of the Twins camp and an agreed upon package going the other way.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2025 Posted December 8, 2025 I guess my primary point was that Joe Ryan is not Tom Seaver. Or Johan Santana, since we're talking deals between the Mets and Twins. He is a pretty good pitcher, no more, no less. That means I wouldn't mind having him, but he's not the kind of guy I'd go all in for. And there are defensible reasons for thinking Tong by himself would be too high of a price.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2025 Posted December 8, 2025 Somebody give that man an Amen!Hey! Let's play comps!Similar Pitchers through 28 Aaron Civale (989.3)Collin McHugh (978.9)Frankie Montas (978.6)Bailey Ober (970.5)Jameson Taillon (970.1)Joe Kelly (969.9)John Farrell (969.6)Wei-Yin Chen (969.3)Zack Wheeler (968.3)John Stuper (968.0) All those being a 968 comp score or higher suggests to me that the algorithm thinks they are all highly comparable, and seeing as there is probably one guy there in 10 over whom you would slobber to get the age 29-33 seasons from, I think we are looking at a foolish proposition.
