Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 Mets acquire pitcher Joey Gerber in a trade. He's done well in limited MLB duty.https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/11/mets-acquire-joey-gerber.htmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gerbejo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2025-11-04_br
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 That big gap between ML appearances makes me think he was injured.Later
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 He has a year of options. Not knowing which prospects are Rule V eligible, I can't comment on who won't make the 40 as a result. He doesn't strike me as somebody I'd clear a roster spot for in early November, but Stearns for better or worse always makes these kind of moves.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 That big gap between ML appearances makes me think he was injured. Had back surgery and missed an entire season and part of another some years ago. I forget the years, butI read that this morning.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 That big gap between ML appearances makes me think he was injured. Had back surgery and missed an entire season and part of another some years ago. I forget the years, butI read that this morning. I know this sounds cruel, but too bad.If it had been an arm injury, some pitchers snap back even better after TJS.But backs are more iffy (see Mattingly- his pained him for years).Later
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 But backs are more iffy (see Mattingly- his pained him for years). Mattingly? Not ringing a SIM Score bell. Who did he pitch for and when?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 But backs are more iffy (see Mattingly- his pained him for years). Mattingly? Not ringing a SIM Score bell. Who did he pitch for and when? He was bothered by recurring back problems for years, regardless of the position he played. No SIM intended. I could have used David Wright as an example if I had thought of him first.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 I think you would have gotten the same question.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Just burp him a few times and he'll be fine.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Don Mattingly never had back surgery.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Please don't get hung up on the word surgery or the position he plays. My point was that arm injuries can be cured while back pain can be chronic. When I said too bad, I meant that it was too bad it wasn't arm related because I would have been more confident that he is fully cured. Back pain can continue to flare up.Later
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 I don't get the baby part
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Please don't get hung up on the word surgery or the position he plays. Me? Hung up?I've had OCD surgery four times and it keeps flaring up.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 And, 2021 back surgery is quite more advanced than it was in thelate 1970's when Donnie would have had it. Not that he did.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Actually, I made Donnie and his back older than they are. I should have said late 80's early 90's... but still.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 I hope you're right and he is healthy.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 My point was that arm injuries can be cured while back pain can be chronic. I am certain that the facts do not bear out this incredibly broad distinction. There are all sorts of different was to injure an arm, and all sorts of ways to injure one's back. I can think of all sorts of guys who recovered from one and all sorts of guys who recovered from the other. I can think of all sorts of guys who did not recover from both categories. I also still have no idea what too bad is supposed to mean.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 I explained what I meant in a post above.If you still can't understand, I don't know how to say it any other way.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 I do not deserve your condescension.I do not really think he cares about your confidence, so if you really mean "I meant that it was too bad it wasn't arm related because I would have been more confident that he is fully cured," I simply do not believe you. (That does not sound "cruel." It sounds like utter nonsense.). But this is hardly the first time you have twisted yourself into a pretzel pretending you meant something you did not.Good God.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 That is exactly what I meant. I say what I mean, with no ulterior motives. We apparently look at things differently. Our minds operate on a different wave length, which is why you keep having to ask me to explain what I mean. And you've been doing that since I joined the CPF. You're still the editor. It will never change.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 No, that is not why I want to know what you mean. I want to know what you mean because you make claims that are baseless and indefensible in pursuit of laying out an attention-grabbing hot take. And I graciously want to give you an opportunity to come clean, or at least walk these takes back when you realize how baseless they actually are.Joey Gerber had a herniated disc in his upper back which led to surgery before the 2021 season, and no back problems have since resurfaced. He subsequently had a forearm issue that also created extended missed time.David Wright had spinal stenosis. Don Mattingly reportedly injured his back wrestling in the clubhouse with Bob Shirley. He denied this, but he apparently suffered some sort of contact injury that led to a degenerative disc condition in his lower back. These, it should be clear, are different conditions. That the player positions matter should also be clear, as pitching and hitting are very different skills stressing different muscle groups in different ways.Mattingly and Wright also were well paid stars on multi-year deals in the second half of their careers. This is an easily releasable player hanging on the end of an MLB roster while making barely over the MLB minimum. He may even get non-tendered as the offseason progresses. It would not take long to assemble a list of a dozen players (pitchers and hitters) who suffered herniated discs and continued to perform afterwards. Without looking it up, I know the list would include Max Scherzer (pitcher) and Miguel Cabrera (hitter), both almost certainly destined for the Hall of Fame. We do not have to have a hot-take on everything. And I really, REALLY do not need you to tell me about my former career. Cut that **** out already, please. This has nothing to do with editing.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Sorry if this is getting out of hand.I really did mean ""that it was too bad it wasn't arm related because I would have been more confident that he is fully cured."If that is not what my words conveyed, that is on me. I shouldn't have said it as "I know this sounds cruel, but too bad."And now I know it.Later
