It's nice that Gibbons became a Met again all these years later. I don't think he was part of the problem, but maybe he was. Maybe every bad move Mendoza made was because of something that John Gibbons whispered in his ear.

So Richardson kept his job but most of the others are gone.

I'm not really sure how/why Mendoza got spared in all this.

I thought Hefner had to go on the day of the trade deadline in 2021, when it was clear that DeGrom was not coming back. The Mets didn't need 100 mph from DeGrom, they needed 200 innings. And this year's team needed more than one of their army of starting pitchers going into camp to avoid coming completely unglued. As scary as it sounds, I'm not disagreeing with Alpodaca's suggestion that somebody will pick him up -- nerds might be crunching out a whole lot of data, but the info is still being interpreted by dumb jocks. I hope he goes to a division rival.

I do feel some sympathy for Chavez, though. It's not his fault that Alonso/McNeil/Lindor/Nimmo have all already had their best seasons. And if you blame him for other things, doesn't he deserve credit for Alonso's resurgence, or for getting Baty to finally look like he deserves to start on a big league team? Now granted, maybe somebody else can unlock Alvarez on a consistent basis and get the 2024 Vientos back. But I think on the whole that he served the team well.

I tend to reject the special supremacy of the third-base coach. His apparent excellence is or negligence is a function of perhaps 10 or so calls a year. That is probably understated, but using that number, if he gets eight of those right, he is seen as being an asset, and if he gets four of them right, he is seen as a liability. But the difference between those two is pretty slender, and not particularly predictive of what will happen the next year.

In addition to making those high-stakes calls, he has to relay signals, so a lot responsibility falls on him, but not a lot of control over outcomes. in my new order, I give my base coaches equal status, and they take turns alternating each series who gets to coach first and who gets to coach third.

Sarbaugh was also the infield defense coach. Brett Baty had a pretty good defensive season, so credit to Sarbaugh there. Everyone else on the infield…not quite so much.

I think that since they're keeping Mendoza, they should bring in coaches who complement his laid back style, not copy it. They need a couple of gung-ho types just to reignite the spirit that it seemed to me they were missing this year.

But that's just me.

Very happy they retained Richardson, though. He seemed to unlock something in the running game. Other teams will spend the winter trying to copy it, but he seems to have a knack in this one particular department.

He has been in charge of minor league hitting for the Mets and before that was hitting coach for the Cardinals.

I don't know how "in charge of hitting" differs from "hitting coach" but I guess we'll find out.

Per Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the Mets are hiring Kai Correa as their new bench coach.

Correa held the same role from 2020-2023 with the Giants. Most recently, he served as the Guardians' Major League Field Coordinator, as well as their director of defense, baserunning and game strategy.

Jeff Albert was (with a lot of luck) predicted by Mets Roster Central.

Kai Correa is a native of Hawaii. He has some Japanese descent, but I do not see any reports that speaking Japanese is in his portfolio. That would be cool, though.

He went straight from college to coaching, with no professional playing experience, which strikes me as an increasingly common background for rising coaches these days. He went 1-2 as an interim manager for the Giants in 2023. And if the Mets do not improve on their 2025 performance next year, there is a good chance he gets to add to that record.
