Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 Team is spiraling. No end in sight. No solutions anywhere. Stearns roster isn’t perfect but it’s not this bad.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 The pitching is this bad though, Stearns has a lot to answer for , he won't get fired though, elevate Gibby ?
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 Well, Hefner was supposed to be a genius pitching coach. But if your starters can't get out of the 4th inning repeatedly, perhaps his genius could be employed by another team. When you have to use 5-6 relievers every night, it's inevitable that one or two of them are going to blow up.Someone has to go. I nominate Hefner.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 I will again suggest that pulling starters after 85 pitches is doomed.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 I will again suggest that pulling starters after 85 pitches is doomed. As a concept, or do you feel another manager would stop the practice?Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 I imagine that it feeds from organizational philosophy.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 The pitching lab needs looking at , is there a case to be made that Mendoza has a quick hook? From what I see it's not like he is pulling starters throwing gems
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 I imagine that it feeds from organizational philosophy. Yes. That philosophy would have to be changed, not just the coach or manager who are following orders.Later

From what I see it's not like he is pulling starters throwing gems No, indeed, but they don't have to be throwing gems for you to want to get the most out of them.It is a myth that we have to make decisions about pitchers based on the number of times through the lineup they have gone, based on the number of innings, or up/downs. You don't need to commit that far into the future. One more out, then re-assess. One more batter, then re-assess. One more pitch, then reassess.Every out you can get out of your starter keeps one more ounce of powder dry in the pen. Make the other team make you take him out. You won't need him again for five days. Was Manaea throwing a gem? He was not, but he had been pitching well for two innings, and we knew the bullpen was both taxed and faltering.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 Yeah , seems like a philosophy
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 As Jim Brosnan was told by his manager (Solly Hemus?) in The Long Season, "Throw as hard as you can for as long as you can".A good philosophy. Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2025 Posted August 17, 2025 Mendoza's not the one making all the stupid roster moves. Stearns has got to go. He seems to think this is fantasy baseball; it's not.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2025 Posted August 17, 2025 Someone has to go. I nominate Hefner. I was for this in 2021 when it became clear that DeGrom wasn't coming back. Sustainability doesn't matter at all. The Rays have lived and died by this sword because they can't afford to hold on to elite talent. We can.
