As a second-round draft pick with the name "Blade," I expected him to be sleek and athletic and aquiline. It's not like he was fat and un-athletic, but he was just big — round face, broad across the shoulders, enormous thighs. He looked like his roommates gave him the name Meat, or Boner, or Chewy a week into freshman year, and the whole campus knew him by that name by Thanksgiving. And they all wanted him for their intramural basketball team, because even though he was the last guy down the court, nobody could get around him in the paint, and he could outleap taller guys for the jump ball.

Wore sandals and shades and touristy Mexican print tops to class. Somehow graduated on time even if it seemed like he divided his time between carbo-loading and pickup basketball.

He is listed as only 207, but he seemed to be a member in good standing of The Future Jeff D'Amicos of America.

If he carbo loaded, it looks like he put that all behind him.

Sounds like a cool guy.

That personality would have been fun to have around.

That is what he looked like. I cannot speak much to who he actually was. He and Drew Gilbert are some sort of mystical package deal, like Jeff Kent and José Vizcaino. They played together at Tennessee and they played together with the US national team. They met up again in the Mets system and played together at Syracuse, and now they go off to become Giants together.

Blade and Drew, Drew and Blade. Here are them in their college days with Team USA, with Tidwell looking thinner and Bladier.

(Warning: "Born in the USA" misuse.)

Janzen Blade Tidwell. The middle-first club is really having a “Memories of” moment.

Tidwell did not make the all-time Mets “goes by middle name” leaderboard. How many can you name?

Boyce Cedric Mullins will begin challenging for a spot soon.

How close to that have you heard they are?

OE: missed that other post. Real close, as in he's here.
