Mike Vasil is a right handed starting pitcher now at Binghamton.

The 2021 draftee from the U of Virginia was just voted Eastern League player of the month.

Welcome to the family, kid.

Make us proud.

He turned 23 in March. He's come up through the ranks, from the Florida Coast League to St. Lucie to Brooklyn before arriving at Binghamton. He's long been on the Mets ranked prospect list. Buzz is we may see him at Citi Field as soon as 2024.

If we continue to stink, I wouldn't be surprised by the end of 2023...

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Mets, are proud to announce that RHP Mike Vasil has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Month for May.

Vasil wowed Rumble Ponies fans over the last month with his dominance and is second in all of Minor League Baseball with a 0.72 WHIP. Over a stretch of three starts last month, he allowed only one run over 21 innings, going at least six innings in all three outings.

Vasil currently carries an impressive strikeout to walk ratio of 54 to 6. His .159 opponent batting average is second in the Eastern League. He finished the month with a 2.52 ERA.

Vasil is the first Binghamton player to win an Eastern League monthly award since Brett Baty was named Player of the Month for July in 2022.

8 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K in his last start.

It dropped his ERA below 6.(5.59)

Something to build on.

This is from Anthony DiComo's Mets Beat newsletter today:

At that point, as Syracuse pitching coach Kyle Driscoll put it, Vasil "went right to the drawing board again." With Driscoll's help, the right-hander worked to "optimize" his fastball to account for the smaller seams on the Triple-A ball, making some tweaks to improve the ride -- otherwise known as induced vertical break, or the illusion of upward movement -- on that pitch.

I wasn't aware that they used a different baseball at Triple-A than at Double-A. Why would that be? Wouldn't it make sense for MLB affiliated teams to use the same baseballs at all levels?

I never knew about different size baseballs, either.

As for Vasil, his record since being promoted to Syracuse is 3-3 5.28, 58 IP, 58 H, 10 HR, 30 BB, 59 K.

Several Mets blogs are saying he may join the rotation in early 2024.

He needs more time. I hope they don't rush him.

My kid's getting lit up again - 6 ER in 5 IP for Syracuse..

His ERA is 11.20.

Methinks he might need some more seasoning in Binghamton.

Another poor outing:

4.1IP 5H 5R 5ER 1BB 5K 2HR 10.80 ERA

I don't think we'll be seeing him this year unless he has a dramatic turnaround.

Maybe he needs thirty minutes with Rick Peterson.

Maybe the scouts got it wrong.

His game numbers:

He needs an intervention.
