I think what he's really saying is, nobody wanted him.

Either that or Stearns values him far more than do other GMs.  I never quite understood the desire to trade for Robert Jr and expecting him to be the answer for CF for the Mets.  Yes, he has a great deal of physical gifts, but it has only translated to one very good season in his career.  He is oft injured and inconsistent.

The key distinction here is “the answer.”

Robert was not a bad a lottery-ticket acquisition:  he cost little to trade for other than the money.  He’s got massive talent and if he can stay on the field he’s excellent defensively with huge upside potential offensively.

Now, depending on Robert to be a key contributor as an everyday player?  That’s where the problem lies.  I do get the desire to have him on the team.

This contest was a non-starter either way.  Not only did the Mets not find a deal for Robert they liked, but with Taylor going as part of a package along with Clay Holmes, it is hard to peg down what the ultimate market value was that the Mets discovered for him.

Something like 20-25% of Jefferson Rojas?
