This appears to be a huge unforced error by Mendoza. Makes no sense whatsoever.

He didn't anticipate Taylor coming up in a game situation.



That probably isn't very foresigthful (foresightful?), as (a) whoever was entering was entering into the three-hole and ( the basic rule is to sub for offense when you are behind and defense when you are ahead.

Yeah. If he couldn't anticipate that a key offensive situation might develop ahead of the #3 spot in the lineup in the remaining 5 innings of the game…that's not a good look.



So he burns his only backup outfielder and has to play McNeil and Marte both out there for the rest of the game (or burn another player and use another infielder in the outfield). When the alternative was playing Marte there for a few innings and then still having Taylor available for later if needed. Just dumb all around.
