Robert Dominguez, as noted in the roster thread, was a victim of his own sudden health.

He was out of commission for four years, finally threw a single inning for St. Lucie, and that was enough to establish that he wasn't injured anymore, and could be legally released. And so, after that one appearance, he came back to his locker and got a pink slip.

I read an article (from a Chicago website) a couple of weeks ago saying that the Cubs asked for Mat Allan for Baez, but the Mets told them Allan was untouchable and offered Crow-Armstrong instead. I try not to "what if" about this team plus Crow-Armstrong in center, but he's making that hard.

THat's always the trick with prospects, knowing which ones to trade and, maybe more importantly, which ones not to.

oe: although, while looking up Matt Allan, I'm not sure that story holds water.

Allan was drafted in the 3rd round in 2019 and made the back half of the Top-100 prospects lists prior to 2021 despite not playing in 2020.

Problem was, he didn't play in '21 either, or '22, or '23, or '24. So what happened to this guy and why would you put an 'untouchable' label

on someone who hadn't pitched in a year and a half by the time of the Baez deal in August of '21?

He has now reappeared, splitting 10G/9 starts combined for Brooklyn and Port St Lucie, but only for a total of 19 innings.

PC-A was their 1st round pick the next year in that truncated 2020 draft but between the missed Covid year and a late start in Low-A in '21,

he had racked up just 32 total official plate appearances when he was dealt away.

I write that trade off to the front office still being run by 'Make-a-Splash Steve' and not yet by Stearns or some other more longer-term thinking PoBO

If you really thought enough of a guy to draft him 19th overall, it's kind of irresponsible to deal him away despite such a small trial run. But he

was adopting the 'Don't just stand there, Do Something!' approach with a first place team. Plus it made Lindor and Diaz happy to have their friend and

countryman with them so maybe keeping the main cogs in the labor force happy played into that decision as well.

People forget that Lindor had gone down with an oblique injury and was out for 5 weeks beginning in mid-July (when the team was indeed in first place).

Judging prospects too early (like they did with Crow-Armstrong and Allen) can be tricky.

For example, Elian Peña, the 17-year-old with five-tool potential at shortstop from the Dominican Republic who earned a franchise record $5 million international signing bonus this year, is still looking for his first hit after 17 AB. Will he be good? Nobody knows. But they're betting big money that he will.

He's now 0-24, but I doubt if he will break the string with a homer off Warren Spahn.
