This is where Megill needs to start to show he's capable of more than five innings.

Indeed, but ... start length is now far more a product of what the manager needs, and what he is willing to allow you to do, than it is of what a guy demonstrates he is capable of. Dude struck out 10 his last start, but got in the soup and was pulled after 85 pitches with one out to go in the fifth.

And he just can't get over that hump.

He seems to hit it every time. Sometimes in the 4th or 5th, occasionally in the 6th, but almost never longer than that.

And Butto sets minds at ease with one pitch.

I thought that was an easy out off the bat then I remembered: Wait, that's not Harrison Bader out there and it's not Tyrone Taylor ... it's Jeff McNeil!!

But he got the job done even if with a couple fewer style points.

Boy Lindor's been behind in counts a lot.

... but he snuck one through the IF anyway.

Yeah, he seems to be committed to jumping on the first pitch in clutch situations, though not only then.

Who is McGill?

I believe the old saying is that Harvard is the McGill of the United States

Umpires calling runners out by name on the PA is also a bad precedent.

The fact that the umpire specifically made a clear statement to the crowd about the call and the result is to be applauded.

Saying “Juan Soto” is probably not best practice and it should have been “Number 22” or “batter-runner” but I'm ok with excusing it here because the explanation was clear and necessary.

Soto reached 1st safely and then was called out for passing Nimmo between 1st & 2nd.

I guess the fact that Nimmo wound up back on 1st base is what negates the hit but that seems like a non-sensical exception.

I agree it must be scored a hit.

Because it is a force play, a hit can only be awarded if the preceding runner reaches the base safely to which he is forced. But, Nimmo *did* reach second safely. The fact that he later retreated should be of no consequence.

The only prohibitions on running the bases backwards is (a) for purposes of confusing the defense or (B) to make a travesty of the game.

Megill has some moments, but I think he's the odd man out when Montas, Manaea and Blackburn return.

Isn't Blackburn the most likely odd man out? Sure, he'll join the team as a sixth starter but barring some obvious transformation into a good pitcher, it seems like he would be replaced when Montas/Manaea return.

Manaea is the only guy of those three who automatically slots in front of Megill in the pecking order and he could be the third of the three to return, he certainly won't be the first. So let's not fall victim to the 'backup QB' logic here and assume that the replacements we've yet to see throw a pitch are destined to be instant upgrades.

And who knows what the situation will be when the first or any of that trio returns. These things sometimes have a way of working themselves out, sometimes positively, sometimes not.

Right now Megill is pitching to a 3.5 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and a K-rate a shade over 12/9 -- kind of the definition of a 3rd/4th starter at worst on most teams. He walks too many (as does the entire staff) and seems to lose effectiveness quickly at some point usually around the 5th or 6th but, as mentioned, it's not like there's an obvious better choice on hand on either the major or minor league level aside from Manaea and he's at least a month from being ready.
