Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 New veteran's ballot for the baseball HallThe National Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Monday this year's ballot for the Era Committee, which will focus on the Classic Baseball Era -- the period prior to 1980, including Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues stars. Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, John Donaldson, Steve Garvey, Dave Parker, Vic Harris, Tommy John, and Luis Tiant are all up for consideration as part of the Classic Baseball Era ballot. I'm not familiar with Donaldson. Boyer was a brief Met and scored his 1,000 run while on the team. He passed way too young at 51. . It's a shame that Allen and, most recently, Tiant passed before they could enjoy such an honor. I can't predict how these committees will vote.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Only a small percentage of Donaldson's statistical record has been added to the official register, and that isn't the most impressive thing in the world, but the unofficial record has unearthed something stupid like 420 wins. Most of that record is documented in newspapers, too. Also, he was additionally a star outfielder/hitter. It's up to research that's more nuanced than I can offer to say what level of competition that record was achieved against, but it's an impressive pile of numbers. In addition to black circuits, he frequently played semi-pro ball across the northern plains states and Canada as the only black player on otherwise-white teams.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Thanks for clearing that up.When I read the quote, I thought of this guy:https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/donaljo01.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/donaljo01.shtmland was wondering how he was mentioned in the same breath as the words "Hall of Fame".In a perfect world, the statues of both Allen and Tiant would be in the Hall with them wearing Mets caps.Later
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Allen and Boyer are interesting cases. No to Garvey, Parker, or Tiant. Dr. Jobe would also be an interesting candidate but not John himself.I'll admit unfamiliarity with Donaldson and Harris. Time for some reading!
