Apparently Paul Blackburn's back still burns so he's been returned to NY for "imaging".

Sounds like his return from the IL is on hold so we'll see another Megill start next time around the rotation at least.

Did anyone catch Gary's comments on Tuesday night about, not this Philly series coming up but next week's four-game series at Citified?

Specifically he was talking about the TV lineup: Thursday = FOX, Friday = Apple+ (or, as I call it, radio), Saturday = SNY, Sunday = ESPN

Ugh!

Jeez. Did youse actually think that that chart was gonna hold for more than three or four days? Plotting out the pitching rotations for like half the league for about a month out.

Madness.

No, I didn't. And I wrote that up front.

I couldn't have been clearer.

So then what's the point? I was being polite when I wrote "madness". It's more like OCD.

I'm gonna chart out Mark Vientos's next 100 homers, when he hits them, against which pitcher and who's on base when he hits 'em. No problem if I'm off because I'll just adjust my chart as we go along.

TORONTO — The New York Mets plan to shuffle their rotation this weekend in Philadelphia to better align their best starters for the biggest games of the season down the stretch. If all goes according to plan, the Mets will have Luis Severino, David Peterson and Sean Manaea in line to pitch the penultimate series of the season in Atlanta — with Severino then lined up for the final game of the regular season if needed.

You might do better watching the Apple TV broadcast and going to radio for the ESPN game. Apple is at least trying to deliver a good product (and Wayne Randazzo is pretty good).

ESPN? Basically unwatchable. I'm attending that game rather than subjecting myself to their broadcast.

As noted above by batmagadanleadoff is that the Mets are using their two remaining days off (the first of which is today) to juggle the rotation in order to get their three hot hands starting in the Atlanta series.

Probably more consequential is the Braves losing All-Star starting pitcher Reynaldo López for the remainder of the season. He hadn't been slotted to go against the Mets, but they've called up Cuban emigree Daysbel Hernández to take his rotation turns. Hernández has been effective as a reliever in a few callups this year.

Today is a full breather for us. Not only are the Mets off, but so are the Braves, Diamondbacks, and Padres.

This weekend's series have the Braves hosting the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks hosting the Brewers, and the Padres visiting the Giants.

With the Mets playing the Phillies, that means that three of the four Wild Card contenders will be facing first-place teams.

Except that I don't get Apple+ so don't have a choice in that matter.

The Phils dragged their feet long enough before announcing lefty Kolby Allard as today's starter. Kolby has done well in some very occasional spot starts this season. The Mets have a good chance to exploit the situation, as Kolby (aka "Dynasty II") will have that turn come around in the rotation in the next series as well. The Philz pad is big enough to keep them from panicking and switching to a four-man rotation, but the Mets and Braves could trigger them out of that mindset over the next two days.

Speaking of teams with holes in their rotation, The Braves still haven't announced a replacement for Reynaldo Lopez. Righthander Daysbel Hernández has joined the team and will likely get at least one start, but it's looking more likely by the day that they'll switch to a four-man set sometime before the start of the Mets series. It will be hard to get Max Fried into that series, but they'll probably find a way to do it if the Mets force their hand.

Even the Brewers are juggling, inserting D.L. Hall and skipping Frankie Montas. Montas was excellent on Thursday, so he's probably just getting a blow, but it isn't clear where or when the Brewers are planning on re-inserting him.

So that's where we are — the Mets are suddenly, seemingly, the most secure in their rotation of anybuds.

The Padres and Diamondbacks have swapped places in front of the Mets. Both teams playing on the west coast really gives the Mets a chance to win early and put some pressure on them.

As the team somehow endures their first losing streak of September, they are blessed to still be in a tied position for the last playoffs spot.

Milwaukee has returned Frankie Montas to their rotation, and he's currently on schedule to meet the Mets in the pentultimate game of the year.

Atlanta has finally announced that righthander Grant Holmes is taking Reynaldo Lopez's spot in the rotation. Holmes — a longhair/handlebar mustache type who looks like he works with Ryne Stanek at the renaissance festival axethrowing booth — has spent most of the season in the pen with modest success. He isn't currently scheduled to appear against the Mets, but he will have the weight of the world on him against the Reds tomorrow eve.

The pitching lineup for the Braves series — Spencer Schwellenbach ®/Chris Sale (L)/Charlie Morton ® — remains unchanged, but the Braves still might try to find a way to replace Morton with Max Fried. If the Mets can get their backs to the wall, they might even do it at the last minute.

On the back of his above-and-beyond-all-expectations game-saving relief appearance for the Phils against the Mets over the weekend, Taijuan Walker has been given the start for the opener of the Phils-Mets series at Citi Field.

The eyes of the world however are on Atlanta fill-in starter Grant Holmes as he matches up against Grant Williamson and the Reds, trying to keep his team's destiny within their control.

The Mets will likely be rolling out a whole bunch of righthanded bats against lefthanded Washington starter Mitchell Parker. Tyrone Taylor, Harrison Bader, Luisangel Acuña, our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you.

I just realized that if the Mets win the third Wild Card, they'd likely be playing their opening postseason series in Milwaukee, which is where they end their regular season.

I seem to recall that once, before the expanded playoffs, the two AL Division champs ended the regular season against each other, playing a series of meaningless games right before switching to very meaningful ones.

Posted

That's an interesting observation.

I don't think, however, if the Mets do qualify for the post-season, any game the Mets play before then is likely to be "meaningless."

If they clinch the third Wild Card Slot, they still have motivation to chase the second. If they clinch the second, ... yadda yadda yadda.

Of course, they could clinch and then give up on the chase for a higher spot, lest they spend all their bullets before the post-season starts.

Posted

Oh, I agree. The games were meaningless in that old ALCS example I remember, but I doubt that the Mets will have the luxury of playing meaningless games this year until and unless they get eliminated.

Posted

Milwaukee is 2 game back of LA for the first round bye (really 3 games since LA has the tiebreaker). There's a high likelihood the games will also matter for the Brewers.

Posted

I'm a'hoping that, by the time the series with the Braves comes to pass, Atlanta will be less mindful catching the Mets, and more focused on staving off the Cubs. It would be perhaps helpful if the Cubbies were cooperating more, but most teams in the league have spent the last week or two gravitating toward five hundred. The entire league has gone 4-6, 5-5, or 6-4 over their last 10 games.

In fact, because of that, the Mets can still lay claim to being the hottest team in the league, along with the Rockies(!!!).

Today will be the second of what looks like four lefthanded opposing starting pitchers in five days. Stay sharp, righthanded Mets.

The Braves are still keeping their powder dry, keeping things guessy with regard to who might be starting more than a day in advance. The guesses are educated, sure, but they make no announcements because the Mets have put their backs pretty close to the wall, and they have to keep the option open of making a panic move.

On the upside for Atlanta is that secondbaseman Ozzie Albies is killing it in his AAA rehab assignment, and is expected to be back in the Braves lineup tomorrow, when they open their series with Miami.

It's a good period for NL East infielders, as Edmundo Sosa is returning from the Injured List for Philly, and hopefully, the Mets get Francisco Lindor back on the field.

The Mets have now woken up every morning for two consecutive weeks in possession of a playoff-bound record. That means little until the word "clinch" is used, but it's a good, good feeling.

Well, that certainly doesn't look right.

The Mets have announced their intent to use Severino/Peterson/Manaea in the Braves series, and the day off before the series allows them to skip Quintana to do just that, but that plan was announced before they opened their lead to 2.0 games over the Braves and Manaea revealed his September success to be reinforced over his last two starts. They may not find a need to go forward with that plan after all.

And if it does go down that way, Q likely at least gets the opener of the Brewers series instead of Megill. If we don't hear anything else, we're going to have to plug him in for that one tomorrow.

Things will start tightening up from day to day. I imagine it's a possibility that Quintana may get some bullpen time going forward, maybe as an option to take Alex Young's role.

The team could end up really having interesting options among Quintana, Megill, and Senga as a fourth starter if and when this post-season happens for them.

Last 20 games (including today's):

Mets: 16 - 4

PHI: 13 - 7

MIL: 12 - 8

SDP: 12 - 8

ATL: 10 - 10

I know it gets frustrating when we see the other contenders win and we lament winning our game but not gaining any ground, or gaining ground on just some of them. But think about how fans of those teams must feel: 'Man, we're playing really well but we can't shake those fuckin' Mets cuz they win every night!'

The Brewers have reinserted platinum-selling country recording artist Colin Rea into their rotation. They are only three games behind the (now tied) Dodgers and Phillies for the league's best record, so it looks like they still will have motivation to come at the Mets hard in the last series. Ironically, that becomes more likely if the Mets continue to beat the Phils. But hey, expect nothing to be easy from now going forward.

While Ozzie Albies is supposedly all-systems go to return tomorrow, the Philles also expect a returning player, as Austin Hays has been rehabbing and expects to return from a rectent outing with a kidney infection, which apparently isn't always a euphemism for an STD.

Mets ESPN playoff odds are only 8% better than the Braves, even though they're two games up on the Braves with just nine games left to play.

Padres 87-66 (+2) (99.5%)

Mets 85-68 (--) (63.3%)

DBacks 85-68 (--) (82.0%)

Braves 83-70 (-2) (55.2%)

The DBacks are given an almost 20% better chance of making the playoffs than the Mets even though the two teams have identical records and the Mets hold the tiebreaker advantage over the DBacks.

Must be that looming head-to-head series with the Braves, right? (But the DBacks and Padres end their seasons playing each other). Or that the Mets finish the season with a tough schedule, at least on paper, playing three playoff contenders.

I don't think I really trust these percentages. It feels as if they still use info from April when the Braves were healthy and Mets were losing often

I look at the percentages on Baseball Reference every day, but I don't really trust them either. All I know for sure is that a week from now, after the series in Atlanta has concluded, we'll know a hell of a lot more than we do right now.
