Places where people are born

I've been noticing that, when players get added to the UMDB, I see some birthplaces much more frequently than others. So I did a quick SQL to see the most common birthplaces of the over 9,500 people in the UMDB for whom I have a place of birth.



The city that I thought came up a lot more often than others is the one that's in the lead by a wide margin.



Perhaps the most surprising item on the list is Cincinnati, coming in ahead of Brooklyn and Miami, among other places.



Mets born in Cincinnati are: Don Zimmer, Roger McDowell, Daryl Boston, Lance Johnson, and Joe Smith.



Anyone care to try to recall Mets players from any of these other cities? (This isn't going to be a quiz. I'm not going to be monitoring the responses.)

I had no idea so many Mets came from San Diego, but I guess that's part of baseball being big in SoCal in general. When I think of Mets from San Diego, I think of Kevin Mitchell first and nobody else second.

I suspect — and this is no more than a suspicion — that Santo Domingo has frequently been filed as the birthplace for Dominican players for whom the line was otherwise blank, and the data entry clerk was on a deadline.



Also, I assume birthplaces in New York City are listed in that weird US Postal Service way, in which Manhattan is listed as "New York, NY," Brooklyn as "Brooklyn, NY" but all the Queens and Bronx birthplaces are listed as "Kew Gardens" or "Kingsbridge."



It'd be interesting to see what the true five-borough total is there.

This number doesn't just represent Mets. It also includes minor leaguers (where the birthplace was available) and opposing players.

I'm probably not going to be able to do that, because I'd have to recognize every postal name place in Queens among all of the New York State birthplaces. Bronx and Staten Island would be easier.

I can do that.



The problem is that the list above presumably represents the IMDB, but not the all-time Mets roster. That 50 guys from Houston presumably includes minor leaguers, opponents, executives, and broadcasters and such. I imagine the number of actual Mets born in Houston is more like 10.

Yes, it's everyone, not just Mets players.

Maybe not, but Tim Locastro is from Auburn, and that can't be more than a half hour outside in the Syracuse orbit, especially with his speed.



Also, lone-Adirondack Met Bill Connors is also an SU grad, so he checks more than one box.

We've attended a few Auburn Doubledays games over the years, though none since they were disenfranchised as part of the MiLB contraction a few years back. Nice little ballpark, yeah, about a 30 min drive from our house. Of course since the Syracuse Mets' park is only 11-12 minutes away that's our preference.

not that there are any Mets from the Rochester, NY that is in Ulster County, NY....but I found this one interesting since there are 2 Rochester, New York....the famous one, and the one that most have never heard of in Ulster County...

Rochester's in Upstate NY right? Way, way Upstate? Well...yes and no. There's the Rochester in Monroe County on Lake Ontario, and then there's the other Rochester, the Rochester in Ulster County. It's better known by the names of two of its hamlets, Accord and Kerhonkson. But it's not as well known as it deserves to be!
