The upside of "stealing" an extra base in that situation is so small that you have to know you're going to make it.

Listening while I'm getting steps on the trail near my house. When Wayne was describing the ball going deeper and deeper I hunched over, then heard the catch and let out a cheer - not realizing there was a woman and her dog about 10 feet behind me. So both of us got a scare, for different reasons. Probably the dog, too. Both gave me a look as they passed.

No one should have to slide to save themselves from wall trauma on a popup in fair territory.
