St. Lucie, now the lowest of the Mets' full-season minor league teams, has thus far been the most successful in 2022. A 40-25 (.615) record in the first half handily clinched for them first place in The Florida State League East Division, 5.5 games ahead of The Jupiter Marlins.



The second half version of the team hasn't quite gotten with the program, starting the season 0-3. Today's loss to Palm Beach extended the team's winless hangover, but it very nearly featured a highlight that I've been hoping to see for a long time, with Omar de los Santos attempting the rare feat of attempting to steal second, third, and home in succession in one trip around the bases. Santos completed the first two attempts, but came up short in attempt #3, as he tried to sneak home when Carlos Dominguez, who walked behind him, broke for second. Palm Beach saw it coming and fired the ball home to catch Omar in a rundown.



I don't know that any Met has ever pulled this feat off at the MLB level. It was mostly known to have occurred in the Dead Ball Era, and for the longest time, it was assumed that Ty Cobb had done it the most. While that would be a darn good guess, a researcher took up the challenge and dug through the boxscores and accounts and pretty solidly established that the all-time leader is, in fact, John "Honus" Wagner."



De Los Santos has been no small part of the team's success this season, and the two steals that he did pull off were numbers 42 and 43 on the season, 14 higher than the next-best in the league, and more than twice what MLB leader Jon Berti has compiled. His .824 OPS also leads the team since infielder Shervyen Newton was rewarded for his torrid start (.923 in 24 games) and rewarded with a promotion to Brooklyn.



Also rewarded with a trip to World-famous Coney Island has been starting pitcher Mike Vasil. Vase started eight games with the Lucies, going 35 innings and compiling a deGromian 1.80 ERA. He struck out 37 and walk 11 in that period, and he'd really like to hear you cheering him on from your seats out at the ocean.



Killing it out of the pen had been Nathan Lavender. The Purple Herb, since (say it one more time!) promoted to Brooklyn, threw 18 2/3 innings for the Lucies to the tune of a 0.48 ERA. He struck out 30 and walked 11 over that period, so, you know, contact was not a common thing.



The team looks to get back to their winning ways for the second half on Tuesday, hosting Jupiter.

The recent fortunes of the team have mirrored the numbers of top-10 prospect Alex Ramirez. He has seen his average decline from over .300 to the .280's.

Outfielder Omir De Los Santos hit a walkoff homer for St. Lucie last night.

He now has 15 home runs and 70 (that is not a misprint) stolen bases this year.

I hope we'll start seeing him on prospect lists very soon.

Under the able skipperage of Robbie Robinson in his second season with the organization, the Low-A Mets affiliate won 40 games to capture the first half title and 73 games overall, before sweeping all four playoff games to quickly seize the league championship.



Outfielder Omar De Los Santos gave the team 16 homers to go with his 70 steals to lead the way along with slugger Carlos Dominguez, who went deep 20 times.



Dominic Hamel led the starters with 71 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings, posting a 3.84 ERA, while Nathan Lavender helped them to their terrific first half, posting a 0.48 ERA in 18 2/3 innings before continuing to shine in Brooklyn. Overall, Lavender struck out 67 in 47.2 innings, and his name is a color.
