roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 Just an illustration of1) the Phillies' continued defensive problems2) Joe Girardi's unhappy mug3) Wilmer Flores' hustle4) the need for pitchers to cover first INSTANTLY any time the ball is hit towards the firstbaseman. The announcer blasts Familia for "never" getting over, but if you look at the replay at 39 seconds you'll see that all he does is hesitate for about a fifth of a second before he starts running, which is sufficient to botch the play.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 Feel bad for Jeurys there. I know he's making multiple fuck ups and that's on him but still.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Author Posted June 1, 2022 Also, not that it matters much, because it does seem Pederson woulda beat it out anyway, but if you freeze at about 6 seconds, it kinda looks like Hoskins' throw doesn't lead Familia but rather slows him down a bit, which doesn't help. Still gotta score that an E-1.Who do you suppose he's shaking his head at , at about 18 seconds. "Man, I screwed the pooch on that one." OR "Will this shit never end?" OR "Way to go, Rhys, throw it behind me and make look bad."
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 Familia has always generated awkward contact from hitters, so he gets a lot of those kinds of plays. And yes, Hoskins doesn't lead him to the bag, not that he would have made it in time anyway.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 There's just some pitchers who know the moment the ball leaves their fingers, they're fielders. And there are some who are just looking at the game as a series of pitches, thinking of the next one, and always seem to have that moment of "Oh, shit, I'm a fielder."For some relievers with high strikeout rates, the mindset is always that they did something wrong if the ball is put in play, and they start their mental adjustments trying to nail down what that was, before realizing that, holy shit, that's a live ball! They're in that awkward terra incognita situation for a moment, as if they're unsure if the air is breathable.
