Happy Jordany Day

On this day in 2012, Jordany Valdespin collected his first MLB hit, homer, and RBI when he pinch hit for Tim Byrdak (against the Phillies in Philadelphia, appropriately enough), breaking a 2-2 tie with a three-run homer off of Jonathan Papelbon, with two out in the ninth.



The clout made Jordany the first player in MLB history to ever record his first homerun off of a pitcher with 200 or more career saves.

The Mets ended up taking the game after falling behind 2-0 to future Hall-of-Famer Roy Halladay. A little over a year later, Valdespin would hit his last Met homer, also a ninth-inning pinch-hit shot against the Phillies off of the same Jonathan Papebon.

The double by Mike Nickeas setting up the homerun might have been even more unlikely. Had the Mets pinch-run for Ike Davis (quite possibly with Valdespin), that might have been the go-ahead hit.
