I am fine going contrarian to say that the Mets should pursue a good bat.

Obviously it's partly semantics, but the words do matter. The idea that Stroman was a “replacement” for Wheeler was a stupid justification made by team executives to the media. There's no need to repeat it or dignify it, hence my objection.

So how does this work then?

Is B only a replacement for A if we like B? Or if we approve of the logic that got him there? Or does it only count if B is > or = to A?

And of course what started this all off was Chad pointing out that, within the confines of this season at least (the only time they've been concurrently active since Stroman effectively replaced Wheeler in the NYM rotation)

they have been near statistical twins.

I didn't LIKE that Vince Coleman was signed to be a replacement for Darryl Strawberry ... but he WAS signed as a replacement for Darryl Strawberry. One OF'er left so they needed another one and chose him.

If Straw hadn't left then we'd have never signed Coleman. Or was the only way for Straw to be "replaced" (since that word is being used in quotes here) was with a clone of himself?

I don't get it.
