Continuing to announce their coaching staffs well into spring training, the New York Mets are trusting their A-level prospects to the care of Manager Reid Brignac. Brignac sort of replaces Chad Kreuter, who is enjoying a big bump up to AAA. But in a sense with the St. Lucie squad demoted down from High-A, Brignac is only replacing himself, as he was the manager (if only in name) of the no-longer-a-thing A-ball Columbia Fireflies last season.



The team's demotion, at least on the face of it, would seemingly represent a stark reduction in star power for the Treasure Coast patrons, the percentage of players bound for the big leagues was typically about 40% or more for St. Lucie as a High-A squad. It's been more like 10-12% for the Mets A-level teams in the Sally League. That may well have little meaning going forward however, as the absence of the teams short-season squads should probably push a lot more quality players to the St. Lucie Roster, including the mid-summer collegiate draftees who previously would have debuted in the short-season New York-Penn League.



Brignac, doesn't come alone, as he is joined by his bench coach from Columbia, Jay Pecci. Pecci was a veteran of a 14-year minor-league career, including the last eight in indy ball or overseas. His grandfather Joe Gantembein had been a major leaguer with the Philadelphia A's before World War II. It's pretty cool to be able to say that Gramps played for Connie Mack.



Coaching the pitching staff will be Jerome Williams, who fashioned a journeyman big league career as long as Pecci's minor league one. A former highly touted prospect, he didn't really find his niche until switching from the rotation to the pen, ultimately becoming what I suspect is the greatest Hawai'ian-Chinese-Portuguese-Spanish-Japanese-Norwegian-African-Filipino-American in MLB history. The guy makes Tiger Woods' DNA look laughable.



And yes, he too was scheduled to coach for Columbia last season.



New to the Brignac Bunch this season, however, is hitting coach Tommy Joseph, recently retired from a long and winding career that peaked with the 2016–2017 Phillies, during which he hit 43 homers in only 880 big league trips to the plate.



Trainer Austin Dayton joins the team, having been promoted from short-season work over the last three seasons with the DSL Mets and the GCL club. His name is two minor league cities put together, and if he really wants to make it, he should call himself Denver Boston or something.



Perfomance coach Kody Wan is a veteran of the Mets system and he's returning to St. Lucie this season having left in 2016 and spent the last three seasons with Binghamton.

Lucie just gave up a nine-spot to the lowly Palm Beach Cardinals in the first. Austin Faith — which is the name of a Mets pitcher and not a coalition of capital-area Texas congregations — yielded seven, six of them earned, before exiting without recording an out.

Coming into the game, Faith was 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA and I was contemplating a "You gotta' have Faith" George Michael tribute post.

But after tonight, I may have lost my faith.

Well, the Mets pulled within 9-5 before giving up another five in the fifth, with Liam McCall taking the second barrage. But after that, Brendan Hardy came on and shut down the Cards like the last-place squad they are. The Mets again closed the score to 14-8, but no further. With two on and two out in the ninth, new recruit Jimmy Titus went first-pitch swinging, which is just insane, and he popped out to end it.



Such disappointments have been few for St. Lucie, who had won three straight going into the game, but before that, they had taken five L's in a row at the hands of the Fort Myers Mighty Muscles. (I didn't name them, Ben.) So yeah, hooray for our boys, first place in the Low A Southeast League's East Division, but for now, it's just a two game lead on the Jupiter Hammerheads (This is also a name I would not have chosen.)



With big shot prospectos Pete Crow-Armstrong (hurt) and Francisco Alvarez (promoted) out of the picture, the best offense has come from a surprising source in José Peroza. As far as brand-name prospects, José is certainly an under-the-radar comer, but he must be inspired by the José Peraza on the big club his seemingly pedestrian .262 batting average through 26 games has been augmented by 21 walks and 6 (six!) hits-by-pitch bumping his on-base-percentage all the way up to .455. José knows that fuckos aren't throwing strikes and the key to flourishing in this crazy era is to stop helping out by swinging at shit. He's with his walks and his plunks, he's going to black-and-blue his way to the big leagues. In a sense, his name is only one letter away.



He's also second on the team with 18 RBI.



Coming on strong of late in the rotation has been J.T.Ginn. Jaty started the season late due to injury, and was held to three innings in his first start and four in his second, but a sole solo homer has been the only nick in his 1.29 ERA, so they're about to bust him loose. He's gonna bust out. ... Something is going to happen that has something to do with a bust. That's all I can say.



The rotation has been augmented by a deep and talented pen, and none have stepped up more than Matt Cleveland. The Cleve has appeared five games to date, totaling 7 1/3 innings, and his ERA is still unblemished. The former top New England schoolboy hurler has struck out nine in that time. Having been in the system since 2016, Matt's performance to date this season may finally be the step forward he needs to justify his decision to forego college after the Mets picked him in that year's 12th round.



Cle's family comes from the Bronx, and he seems to have grown up a Yankee fan. That may be what has held him back to date, but right now, he's pitching like a Mets man all the way.

Nice job as always.

Two things:

First round draft pick Pete Crow-Armstrong's birthday is listed as March 25, 2002 in baseball-reference.

Alex Ramirez is another player to watch, He recently joined the club from extended spring training and has gotten off to a slow start. But he was one of the most highly rated International signings last year.
