bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Our talents have thrown you for a Loup, is what you're saying. Loup will be throw-ing for the Mets. From Wiki, we learn that he likes hunting and fishing and is "quiet and reserved": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Louphttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Louphttps://www.fangraphs.com/players/aaron-loup/10343/stats?position=Phttps://www.fangraphs.com/players/aaron-loup/10343/stats?position=Phttps://www.mlb.com/news/blue-jays-reliever-aaron-loup-celebrates-first-mothers-day-as-a-father/c-74640504https://www.mlb.com/news/blue-jays-reliever-aaron-loup-celebrates-first-mothers-day-as-a-father/c-74640504The main picture is from 2011, not 1961: https://patch.com/florida/dunedin/meet-the-baseball-wives-of-dunedinhttps://patch.com/florida/dunedin/meet-the-baseball-wives-of-dunedin

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Loup's best years were his first three, when he was pitching to contact and not trying to pump up his K rate. Then it looks like somebody gave him bad advice. The Rays seemed to get him back towards his earlier approach, although his .219 BABIP last season was not sustainable. Still, he's at least serviceable, and could be above average for that role. Looks like a pretty good pick-up.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Author Posted January 28, 2021 I still like Rosenthal as an option. So does MLB.com's https://www.mlb.com/news/trevor-rosenthal-a-top-free-agent-relieverMike Petriello, who argues convincingly that Rosenthal's bounce back is no mirage.[bLOCKQUOTE]In Rosenthal's case, we'd say the 2020 performance means a lot. We'd seen him be great in the past. The velocity remains excellent. The ability to throw strikes looks much improved. There's a history of pitchers needing a minute coming off of Tommy John surgery.[/bLOCKQUOTE]Super-bullpen(Rosenthal inclusive)-plus-JBJ-plus-rotation-lotto-tix may be a better use of the $32M between this team and the luxury tax than certain Twitter shit-stirrers.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 I don't know what to make of Rosenthal- he was good, though a bit short of great (WHIP = 1.25) during his first three full seasons (2013-15)- then his WHIP ballooned to 1.91 in 2016 as his H/9 and BB/9 skyrocketed- he seemed to be back to his old self in 2017 before missing all of 2018 to TJ surgery- he was beyond awful coming back, 26 BB in 15 IP ... bad with Detroit, worse in Washington- and then, as mentioned, bounced back in the partial 2020 campaign: 1.90 ERA and a 0.845 WHIP, essentially the best year of his career although encompassing just 24 IP split between KCR & SDPAnd he still won't turn 31 until the end of May
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Relief can be that way. You do well, you get overused, you do poorly, your work thins out ... wash, rinse, repeat.Except in the small sample sizes of relievers' seasons, those effects get amplified.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Loup gets "around $3M" to play for the Mets this year, per Martino. On the subject of Rosenthal, Fangraphs predicts 2 years/$16M for him. I can't decide if I think that's a good deal or what.
