This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

Jacob deGrom is now baseball's hardest throwing pitcher. His pitches have ticked up a few MPH's over last season. His average fastball is 99MPH and his average slider is now averaging almost 94MPH.



This stat shows Jacob deGrom is getting even better, which is scary

deGrom wouldn't and shouldn't win it if the season ended right now, but he's one of the NL's best 10 pitchers this season, so far, and within striking distance of the league's very best. And by very best, I'm talking about based upon just three or four starts.

Who the fuck cares when deGrom's next start is. Besides, if the Mets can win two more games, they probably clinch a playoff spot.

Mets' COVID and a missed start might have doomed deGrom's chances at the CY Young. he is 1 start behind the league leaders (8 to their 9) - that could prove fatal in such a short season.



The current contenders as I see them:



deGrom is second to Darvish in ERA and ERA+ and is first by a slim hair in FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). deGrom leads the league in strikeouts and K/9 despite the innings difference.



Bauer is the only one with less innings and I included him because he has thrown 2 shutouts! what if he threw 2 more? the stats are going to be hard to separate in such a short year so that is a great narrative for him with voters.



Fried just went on the DL which will likely remove him from the running - he was notable for having allowed zero homers which could have been a nice story for his candidacy if it kept up. He was also undefeated.



I think if it ended today, Darvish wins the award with deGrom 2nd and Fried 3rd.

Fried's a free agent after this season and will, likely, be the best pitcher on the market. I wonder if I can start dreaming again about the Mets getting top tier free agent talent?

Darvish seems to be equal or ahead of Fried in every category except that magic homerun number. I wonder what bWAR thinks it's seeing that I'm missing.

Based on what I see, Fried doesn't have nearly enough service time to qualify for free agency. What am I missing?

Talk about dreaming! I meant Trevor Bauer. I've been conflating those two this year as they've been on top of the pitching leaderboards all season long.

That newfound 100+ MPH fastball (yes, that's right -- "plus" (+)) and deGrom's sudden status as baseball's hardest throwing pitcher must be having a positive effect. Because deGrom's on pace to have the best season of his career -- better even than both of his Cy seasons -- at least pro-rated, granted, because he won't get to pitch even half as many innings as he's thrown in either of his two Cy seasons.

how insane is it that the best pitcher in baseball, already 30, can "find" more velocity? maybe his arm is stronger from the longer offseason? is velocity up league-wide?

Reds lead 3-0 on a first-inning three-run homer off of Darvish by Mike Moustakas, who's only 31 but feels like he's been around for 20 years.

those 3 runs were it for Darvish, who allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks over 6, striking out 9.



Bauer has thrown 7 1-hit innings with 10 K's and is at 101 pitches (the game is in the top of the 8th, unknown if he is done for the night)

fWAR certainly seems more reliable than bWAR when I look at those rankings.



I kind of like deGrom's chances at this point, but a lot of baseball is left (starting with today).

deGrom held serve last night in the NL Cy race. Nola was a little better last night, though, pitching seven scoreless innings of three hit ball -- no walks and 10 strikeouts.



deGrom currently leads the NL in fWAR, K's, K/9, FIP, and ERA.

An oral history of Jake deGrom's college days, as told by his Stetson teammates and coaches. Can someone double-check this piece? I think it says that Davey Johnson --that Davey Johnson-- was the one who got deGrom to switch from infielder to pitcher in college. But I'm not 100% sure. I'm maybe 90% sure -- with a little bit of doubt. Because if it was Davey, I think I would've heard that story by now, which I haven't.
