My hunch is that after a few days of coming to Citi Field to do majority owner stuff rather than as a fan/minority owner, Cohen will find this or that absurd or at least not to his liking, and he'll ask “why is this that way?” and he'll be told, “Jeff wanted it like that.” It won't take long from there to decide that unlike the Supreme Court, Citi Field isn't a lifetime appointment.



Every overhead shot of the current ballpark alongside its predecessor in Arlington during the World Series was a reminder that having a perfectly adequate modern facility in existence doesn't preclude replacing it if you can. And Cohen surely can. He didn't get to be that guy by throwing billions at a whim, but with the billions already accumulated, he didn't come this far to live in somebody else's vision.



Mind you, pandemics and recessions make for an unlikely infrastructure atmosphere, but if they're not endless, neither might Citi Field be.

The other owners are gonna hate Cohen if he does that, for showing state and local governments that baseball teams can build new stadiums without getting handouts. On the other hand, there are hardly any old baseball stadiums left to tear down and the ones that are still here are probably never gonna get torn down so long as they're not ever damaged beyond repair.

As Andrew Zimbalist, an economist who has written extensively on sports/business issues, has said numerous times, if owners could make money by building their own stadiums then you couldn't stop them from doing so. And yet none of them ever do.



I'll take the Mets still playing at CF in 2030 (and beyond) and gladly give the points.

I've been to about half the ballparks, maybe a little more. I like Citi Field a lot. They made some necesary corrections after the first couple seasons.
