First base depth.Tim Healey@timbhealeyThe Mets signed first baseman Matt Adams to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training. Last year, Adams slashed .226/.276/.465 in 111 games with the Nationals.

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Matt, welcome "Big City" to the Big Time but you gotta change your Twitter profile picture ASAP:https://twitter.com/BigCityForRealhttps://twitter.com/BigCityForReal20 HRs last year in 333 ABs for WSH. Could be a lefty bat off the bench, especially if Dom is moved.https://www.fangraphs.com/players/matt-adams/9393/stats?position=1Bhttps://www.fangraphs.com/players/matt-adams/9393/stats?position=1B
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Dom has options and can play in Syracuse, but he really needs to be traded now. I like Adams coming off the bench.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Had a .276 OBP last year and struck out in over a third of his plate appearances. i have no interest in having him at all on the major league roster. Looking forward to him hitting 40 home runs in Syracuse this summer.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 If a team had an opening for a lefty first baseman who can fake it in the outfield, they could have had Adams on a minor league deal. That tells me nobody is going to trade for Smith, or at least give up value in return. Might as well keep him.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Oh, Dom Smith has trade value. The minor league free agent market has a pile of Adamses. Dom Smith may play the same position and bat from the same side, but their respective rights are still very different commodities.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Seems like a Carlos Gomez-style insurance move. Not a bad guy to have at Triple-A if Alonso gets a little banged up.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 With Smith lacking options, Adams won't displace him. But a 26-man roster could conceivably fit an extra lefty power bat, especially if Smith gets regular ABs against righties.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Not if Cespedes and/or Lowrie are in the mix, it won't. (8 starters, Jake-Thor-Stroman-Matz-Porcello in the rotation, Diaz-Betances-Lugo-Gsellman-Familia-Wilson-Brach-Wacha in the pen, and a bench that will have a catcher and Marisnick, and things get tight.)
