Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 That's one better than Art Howe!
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 He seems like a good guy who knows his stuff. How he handles the bright light in his face remains to be seen, but I don't think they could have done better under the circumstances.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 When he was interviewed by Gelbs, he seemed like regular guy Luis rather than new manager Rojas, kind of like Jerry Ford toasting his own English muffins.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Can you think of any manager with as little professional playing experience as Luis Rojas? A season as a punchless corner infielder/corner outfielder for the Expos. That background almost qualifies him as an honorary Wilpon.Obviously there are plenty of managerial success stories featuring skippers who barely scraped by as players, but I imagine that few come from playing backgrounds as fringy as Luis. The organization he played in no longer plays in the same country!
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 And, as I mentioned in the Met HOF thread, Rojas could really endear himself to the NY fans by naming Alfonzo to his coaching staff.Later

That background almost qualifies him as an honorary Wilpon. There was that skinny accountant-looking John Boles who had two full seasons and parts of two others with the Marlins ['96, '99-2001; approx 450 games in total] who was often said to be either the first guy, or at least the first in a very long time, to have never played at any level anywhere. But, other than that, it'll be tough to find someone who can slip under Rojas's 143 PAs at the Rookie Lg level plus maybe some pieces of two Dominican Lg stintsOn the coaching thing, I doubt a rookie manager, especially one named so late in the off-season, is going to get to name his own coaches ... and that's before we even get into the whole idea of picking the coaching staffbased on past popularity.
