G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 The second half of 2018 revealed a pitcher just about as good as Jacob deGrom. And the stretch drive of 2019 saw Zack pitch to the kind of support Jake got.It was gratifying finally getting the Wheeler who was so hyped so many years before.I met him after his rookie season. Had a real glint in his eye when I asked him about beating the Giants (hitting and pitching). Said he was quite happy to have “shoved” against the team that let him go. I imagine he'll have similar motivation several times a year.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I remember seeing him so destroyed by Washington at a CF game with the Lunchpail so bad that Anthony Recker had to come pitch mop-up.I also recall him being an ace down the stretch in 18. And he was a Tuesday Night Stud this year.Mets have such little interest in Alderson projects anymore I guess I'm not surprised to see him go.I guess in the end I'd prefer to have Wheeler on the team than Betran as the manager so this is a backwardsass offseason so far.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 That Nats game was Zack's Citi Field debut for which WHEELS UP t-shirts were packaged with select Field Level tickets. Harvey was hor and the Mets briefly tried to promote the next guy as Dark Knight 2.0.I crossed paths on the concourse with an unassuming Chris Russo that day, presumably on hand to see the guy his Giants let get away.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 What I think I'm going to remember most is that we lost not one but two complete seasons to his UCL replacement surgery, essentially erasing 1/3 of his time as a Met with one tear.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Yeah, that was a heckuva thing.I think of how he was briefly the odd-man-out of the rotation at the top of 2018. He was asked about sliding over to the bullpen and he said something to the effect of, "No, I'm a starter, I've always been a starter, and when I'm healthy, I know I'm one of the best in the game."That seemed to be an awfully big check to write for a guy who had missed 2 1/2 seasons and rocked out a 5.32 ERA in the half season he managed to squeeze in there. But God bless him, after briefly going down to AAA until a spot (naturally) opened in the rotation, his arm started cashing that check, and he got better and better as the season wore on.The time to sign him was probably then.
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
