RIP John Strohmayer, 1946-2019

John Strohmayer, picked up at midseason in 1973 on waivers from the Expos, died from heart problems on November 28 (Thanksgiving) in Redding, Calif. John made nine appearances as a Met over two seasons, including a scoreless inning in the Mets' comeback from down 7-1 to beat Atlanta, 8-7 on July 17.

In retrospect, if you wanted to throw an immaculate inning in 1971, it would be hard to choose a better lineup to face than Mike Ryan, Woodie Fryman, and Denny Doyle.

The Strohmayer photo in Edgy's post above was generated from an internet image of a Strohmayer Topps Vault photo release -- instead of the actual physical Topps Vault photo itself. The internet image likely degraded during the process to create the bootleg photo as the internet image was "de-watermarked" and edited to remove the other player appearing right behind Stroh. Compare the bootleg autograph photo in Edgy's post with the Topps Vault photo in the side-by-side comparison below. You can see how in the original image below (left), Stroh himself appears slightly sharper, and there is much more detail in the Shea outfield fence -- by comparison, the outfield wall distance markers are barely visible in the bootleg image (right) and there is less detail in the outfield foliage. Also, there is barely any contrast between infield dirt and grass in the bootleg photo. And in the bootleg photo, it's almost impossible to tell where the outfield warning track ends and the outfield wall begins: in fact, you might not even know there's an outfield wall at all in the bootleg photo.
