I mean, I'm assuming that it's Bill Buckner in Lunchbucket's avatar, because I believe the photo pays tribute to Jesse's first game (the only one in which he wore 61?) and Buckner was the only batter he faced. Beyond that, it's a mustachioed Cub who is appearing to either be approaching or backing out of the lefthanded batter's box. Perhaps backing out, as the ump has just called a strike and the catcher is returning the ball.

But why does he have the gut of 60-year-old boozehound of a coach? And why does his left leg seem to have been stricken by, like, super-polio?

Were Jesse's pitches so devastating that they caused you to age and succumb to disease? If only temporarily?

Ooooh! Oooooh! I can answer that. I know the answers.

Buckner looks paunchy because it was one of those hellacious windy days that Wrigley is known for. The wind was blowing out that day. Kingman hit a homer that was a mile high popup that, at first, looked like it was gonna land on the pitcher's mound. It carried all the way to straightaway centerfield into the stands. In that screenshot, the wind caught a hold of Buckner's shirt and blew it out, puffing it to billowy fat man dimensions.

Buckner's leg looks weird because that's probably an in between frame shot originally recorded on VHS, probably a several generations copy, which was eventually transferred to DVD. Those old VHS in between frame, or freeze frames, often do weird things to the image.

I received these originally from a Mets fan who screenshotted them from a period videotape, channel 9 which I dunno about you was always fuzzy over-the-air to me. Then for whatever reason, I saved them by shrinking them to postage-stamp sizes. It's like the Multiplicity effect by now. Here's the whole series:

I don't have the original email where the pics came in, and I asked the guy who sent em to send again but so far he hasn't

That's the Chicago broadcast, not WOR's. Notice the debris all over the field? That stuff was flying all over the place like a bunch of crazed bees. Windy day in the Windy City. The whole team had NOB's except Orosco, who was given a last minute temporary replacement uniform because his regular #47 was, apparently, not packed. And Mazzilli had no NOB either, for reasons that I don't know for sure but could probably take an educated guess as to why not.

Buckner looks kinda svelte in this shot. And his left leg regenerated to normal looking, too.

And who was that Met fan?

I need evidence of this and your theory.

I misspoke. He isn't a Mets fan

If I remember correctly, veteran-non-roster-invitee-on-a-minor-league-contract Nellie Briles had been announced as making the team, but then saw the lowball big-league salary the Mets were offering, said "Fuck it," and retired.

So Jesse was given Briles' slot at the last moment, and they didn't have a chance to customize a jersey for him.

Can't say I recall what the Mazzilli deal was. He had a really good game that day, if I remember my opening days rightly.

Wanna know what else? I own that actual game worn Orosco #61 jersey.

When you wear it do people stop you and say, "Yo, whattup with the wrong number?"

I never wore it outside. I probably never wore it inside, either.

I know, I was playin'.

Do they wash game worn items or is that frowned upon?

By "they", I assume you mean collectors. I think they do frown upon it. Especially because the jersey might have a stain or imperfection that could be matched up with game footage, to further establish the jersey's authenticity. Me, I could care less. I've never bought any memorabilia, calculating what I might resell it for.

By 'they' I meant the authenticator/dealer/whoever. Buying someone's sweaty

shirt on one level is kinda gross, but I can see if you're buying a jersey with stains

from a great catch or milestone stolen base that would make sense too.

I've noticed that. That might be a setting somwhere.

I'll look when on a real computer.
